System

The Electronic Ignition (EI) system for the 4.6L engine is a Coil-On-Plug (COP) ignition system. The COP ignition system consists of the following components:
^ Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor
^ Ignition coil
^ Spark plugs

The crankshaft position sensor:
^ is a variable reluctance sensor.
^ provides base timing and crankshaft speed (rpm) information to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
^ is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel mounted on the crankshaft.

The eight separate ignition coils:
^ change low voltage signals from the powertrain control module to high voltage pulses for the spark plugs.
^ are connected directly to each spark plug.
^ are controlled by the powertrain control module for proper firing sequence.

The spark plugs:
^ change a high voltage pulse into a spark which ignites the fuel and air mixture.
^ originally equipped on the vehicle have a platinum-enhanced active electrode for long life.
