Removal
NOTE: The following instructions apply to the CD4E automatic transaxle together with the 2.5L engine.
NOTE: The locations of engine mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the automatic transaxle to the engine.
1. Move the selector lever to "D" position.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Fix the radiator in position on both sides (left-hand side shown).
4. Remove the air cleaner (ACL).
5. NOTE: Use an Allen key to stop the piston rod from turning.
Loosen the suspension strut locknuts five turns (right-hand side shown).
6. Loosen the wheel nuts to both front wheels.
7. Disconnect the electrical connections.

4 Wiring harness retaining clip
8. Remove the water pump cover.
1 Disconnect the engine coolant hose.
2 Remove the bolts.
3 Remove the water pump cover.
9. NOTE: Starter motor to remain in vehicle temporary.
Disconnect the starter motor and remove the starter motor bracket.
10. Install the special tools.
11. Remove the rear transaxle support insulator bracket.
12. Remove the upper bellhousing bolts (1999 MY four bolts).
13. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector (shown from below).
^ Unclip the cable.
14. NOTE: Separate harness from transaxle.
Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor(VSS) electrical connector (shown from below).
15. Disconnect the selector cable from the transaxle.

16. Raise and support the vehicle.
17. Remove both front wheels.
18. Drain the automatic transmission fluid.
^ Place suitable pan under the transaxle.
^ Retighten the drain plug.
19. Remove radiator splash shield.
^ Remove the bolts and clips.
20. Remove the RH fender splash shields.
21. NOTE: Rotate bumper bracket forward.
Remove the bumper bracket on both side from sub-frame (left-hand side shown).
22. Remove the suction accumulator bracket bolts (if A/C equipped).
23. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
^ Separate the cable ties.
24. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe and the rear three-way catalytic converter (TWC).
^ Discard the gaskets.
25. Remove the front exhaust pipe and the rear TWC and take them out.
^ Discard the gaskets.
26. CAUTION: Do not damage boot and ABS sensor ring.
Disconnect the lower suspension arm ball joints and the stabilizer link rods (right-hand side shown).
^ Disconnect the ABS wiring harness bracket from the suspension strut.
27. Raise the automatic transaxle assembly slightly using the Transmission Jack.
28. Disconnect the left-hand engine support insulator.
1 Remove the nuts.
2 Remove the center bolt.
29. Disconnect the right-hand engine support insulator.
30. Remove the steering gear heat shield.
31. Using the special tool, remove the steering gear (two bolts) and tie it up (left-hand side shown).
32. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the subframe (one nut and two bolts).
33. Remove the transaxle cooler line brackets.
^ Reposition the suction accumulator (A/C), if equipped.
34. CAUTION: Support the subframe using Powertrain Lift. Place wooden block approximately 40 inches in length secured to lift under subframe.
Remove the sub-frame.
35. Remove the rear support insulator through bolt.
36. CAUTION: Do not loosen connector cooler inlet to transaxle.
Remove transaxle cooler lines.
37. CAUTION: Do not loosen connector cooler inlet to transaxle.
Remove transaxle cooler lines.
^ Unclip transaxle cooler line from hold down.
CAUTION: To avoid to damage halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
38. Using the special tools, disconnect the left-hand halfshaft.
39. Pull out the left-hand halfshaft and tie it up.
40. Remove the right-hand halfshaft and intermediate shaft.
^ Secure the right-hand halfshaft out of the way with mechanics wire.
41. NOTE: Discard the nuts.
Remove the torque converter rubber and the four torque converter nuts.
^ Remove rubber cover to gain access to the torque converter nuts.
^ Rotate the torque converter to gain access to remaining nuts.
42. Install the Hi-Lift Transmission Jack and CD4F transaxle adaptor.
^ Secure with the Straps .
43. Remove the lower bellhousing bolts.
44. Remove the front bellhousing bolts.
45. Open clamp and disconnect the main control cover vent tube.
46. CAUTION: Do not let the torque converter drop out of the transaxle. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
Install the special tool.
47. Lower the transaxle.
