Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Materials:
Removal
1. Remove the RH valve cover.
2. Remove the LH valve cover.
3. Remove the oil pan.
4. Remove the generator.
5. Remove the power steering pump.
6. Disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
1 Unclip the wiring harness retainer.
2 Disconnect the CMP electrical connector.
7. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) electrical connector.
1 Unclip the wiring harness retainer.
2 Disconnect the CKP electrical connector.
8. Remove the sensors.
1 Remove the CKP sensor.
2 Remove the CMP sensor.
9. NOTE: Remove the bolts and studs in the indicated sequence.
Remove the engine front cover and discard the gaskets.
Installation
1. Prior to applying sealer clean the front cover to cylinder block and cylinder head sealing surfaces with Metal surface cleaner.
2. NOTE: Install the engine front cover within four minutes after applying the sealant.
Apply a 6 mm dot of sealant to the indicated locations.
^ Use Silicone gasket and sealant or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSE-M4G323-A6.
3. NOTE: The engine front cover must be installed in a two step sequence.
NOTE: Locating dowels and the locations of the studs.
Install the engine front cover.
^ Install new gaskets.
^ Install the bolts and studs in the indicated sequence and tighten in two steps.
^ First tighten the seven bolts and studs one quarter turn (90 degrees) after the engine front cover contacts the cylinder block and the cylinder heads.
4. NOTE: Tighten in the bolt and struts in the indicated sequence.
Install the remaining bolts and studs.
5. NOTE: Lubricate tile new O-ring seals with light engine oil before installation.
Install the CMP and CKP sensors.
6. Install the power steering pump.
7. Install the generator.
8. Install the oil pan.
9. Install the RH valve cover.
10. Install the LH valve cover.
