Planetary Gears: Service and Repair
DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove the overrunning clutch outer race.
2. Remove the planet gear bearing thrust washer.
3. Remove the clutch pressure plate snap ring.
4. Remove the front planet.
ASSEMBLY
1. Clean all components with a suitable solvent and use compressed air to dry all parts and clean the fluid passages. Perform the following before assembly:
^ Inspect the inner and outer races for damage or wear.
^ Check the front planet pinion gears for damage or excessively worn teeth.
^ Check for free rotation of the pinion gears.
^ Inspect the pinions for excessive movement on their shafts.
^ Inspect the pinion shafts for security.
^ Check the one-way clutch for broken springs and damaged rollers.
2. Check the operation of the one-way clutch.
1 Place the (A) overrunning clutch outer race on the (B) inner race and verify that when the inner race is held, the one-way clutch rotates smoothly and only in a clockwise direction.
3. Measure the clearance between the pinion washers and the planet carrier.
^ If not within the specification, replace the front planet.
4. Install the front planet into the overrunning clutch inner race.
5. Install the clutch pressure plate snap ring.
6. Apply petroleum jelly to the planet gear bearing thrust washer and install it on the front planet.
^ The planet gear bearing thrust washer outer diameter for the sun gear drum side should be 84.0 mm (3.307 inch).
7. Install the overrunning clutch outer race.
