Fluid - A/T: Service and Repair
NOTE: If a major repair is required, such as clutch band, bearing, etc., the transmission will have to be removed for repair. At this time, the torque converter, oil pan, fluid cooler, and fluid cooler tubes must be thoroughly flushed to remove any contamination. The procedure for partial drain, due to an in-vehicle service operation, is as follows:
1. Remove the fluid level indicator.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Position a drain pan under the transmission, then remove the drain plug and washer. Discard the washer.
CAUTION: Avoid spilling transmission fluid. The fluid may be hot.
NOTE: Measure the amount of Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) drained for use in refilling.
4. Install a new washer and the drain plug.
5. Remove the drain pan and lower the vehicle.
6. Insert a funnel into the oil filler tube.
CAUTION: Do not reuse ATF. Always replace with new ATF.
7. Fill the transmission with approximately the same amount of Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON as drained. MERCON(R) automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON(R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.
CAUTION: Do not overfill.
8. Check the transmission fluid level. Add ATF as necessary.
