Accumulator: Service and Repair

DISASSEMBLY

NOTE: The removal of all of the accumulator piston retainers, accumulator pistons, and accumulator piston springs from their proper bores in the transmission case is similar. The 1-2 accumulator is given as an example.

1. Remove the accumulator piston retaining ring while pressing in the accumulator spring retainer.

2. Remove the accumulator spring retainer.
1 Remove the accumulator spring retainer.
2 Remove the accumulator piston spring.

3. Remove the accumulator piston from the transmission housing by applying compressed air through the appropriate fluid passage. Apply a maximum air pressure of 392 kPa (57 psi).

WARNING: USE CAUTION WHEN REMOVING ACCUMULATOR PISTONS FROM THE BORE USING COMPRESSED AIR TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY.

CAUTION: Do not remove the seal rings from the accumulator piston. If necessary, replace them as an assembly for proper transmission operation.

ASSEMBLY

1. Clean all components with a suitable solvent and use compressed air to dry all parts and clean the fluid passages.
^ Inspect the accumulator piston for damage or wear.
^ Check for worn or broken accumulator spring(s).

CAUTION: Do not remove the seal rings from the accumulator piston. If necessary, replace them as an assembly for proper transmission operation.

2. Measure the free length of the accumulator spring.
^ If not within the specification, replace the spring.

NOTE: Do not compress the spring when measuring it with vernier calipers.

3. Install the lubricated accumulator piston into the transmission case bore.
1 Apply the Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the seal ring. MERCON(R) automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON(R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.
2 Install the accumulator piston into the proper bore in the transmission case.

CAUTION: Apply even pressure to the perimeter of the accumulator piston to avoid damaging the seal ring.

4. Install the new 0-ring onto the accumulator spring retainer.
1 Apply the Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the new 0-ring.
2 Seat the lubricated new 0-ring in the groove on the accumulator spring retainer.

5. Install the accumulator spring retainer.
1 Install the accumulator piston spring.
2 Install the accumulator spring retainer.

CAUTION: Apply even pressure to the perimeter of the accumulator spring retainer to avoid damaging the new O-ring. When installing an accumulator with two accumulator springs, install the accumulator springs in the correct order.

6. Install the accumulator piston retaining ring while pressing in the accumulator spring retainer.
