Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the valve cover.





3. Remove the rocker arm bolts, the seats, and the rocker arms.
4. Remove the appropriate spark plug.

NOTE: Bring the affected piston to Top Dead Center (TDC) to prevent the valves from falling into the cylinder if air pressure is interrupted.

5. Install an adapter and apply 965 kPa (140 psi) of air pressure to hold the valve shut.





6. Use (A) Valve Spring Compressor or equivalent to compress the valve springs. While the valve spring is compressed, remove the (B) valve spring retainer key.

CAUTION: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same position. Mark the components for location.

7. Slowly remove the valve spring compressor tool.





8. Remove the valve spring retainer and the valve spring.





9. Remove and discard the valve stem seal.
10. Inspect the components. If necessary.

INSTALLATION





1. Follow the Removal Procedure in reverse order.

NOTE:
- Use the seal protector provided with the replacement kit to prevent damage to the valve stem seal.
- Lubricate the valve tappet with Super Premium 5W30 SAE Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G before installing valve stem seal.
- Be certain the (A) valve tappet guide plate retainer tabs are toward the rear of the cylinder head, and the (B) valve tappet guide place tabs are toward the front of the cylinder head valve stem seal.
