Connecting Rod Bearing: Service and Repair
REMOVALNOTE: The connecting rod bearings are selective fit to provide the necessary clearance.
1. Remove the spark plugs.
2. Remove the oil pan.
3. Remove the two bolts and remove the oil pump screen cover and tube and gasket. Discard the gasket.
4. Remove the four nuts and remove the oil pan baffle.
5. Turn the crankshaft until the connecting rod from which the connecting rod bearings are to be removed is at its lowest point of travel.
6. Remove the (A) two nuts, the (B) connecting rod cap and the lower connecting rod bearing.
7. Install a short length of rubber tubing over the connecting rod bolts to avoid damage to the crankshaft journals.
8. Remove the upper connecting rod bearing. Push the piston up into the cylinder bore slightly to provide clearance for bearing Removal.
INSTALLATION
NOTE: Lightly oil all bolt and stud threads before installation with Super Premium 5W30 SAE Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G.
1. Thoroughly clean the connecting rod bearings, the connecting rod cap, and the connecting rod.
CAUTION: Contaminants allowed to rennin on the connecting rod cap or connecting rod bearing can distort the connecting rod bearing or damage the crankshaft journals.
2. Clean the crankshaft journal and lubricate it with Crankcase Conditioner B7A-19579-C or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A.
3. Install the upper connecting rod bearing into the connecting rod and pull down until it seats on the crankshaft.
NOTE: When installing the (A) connecting rod bearing, ensure the (B) tab on the bearing engages the (C) slot in the connecting rod and that the bearing is fully seated.
4. Install the (A) lower connecting rod bearing in the (B) connecting rod cap.
- Lubricate the bearing surface with Super Premium SAE 5W30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G.
5. Install the connecting rod cap.
- Fit the connecting rod cap with a bearing.
- Tighten the connecting rod nuts to 35-41 Nm (26-30 ft. lbs.).
- Back off the nuts two or three turns and retighten to 35-41 Nm (26-30 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the oil pan baffle.
7. Install the oil pump screen cover and tube.
8. Install the oil pan.
9. Install the spark plugs.
