Inspection and Verification (Start Testing Here)

1. Verify the customer's concern by operating the instrument cluster to duplicate the condition. Observe the indicators and gauges to determine if they are operating properly with the ignition switch:
- in RUN with the engine OFF.
- in START before the ignition switch is released.
- in RUN with the engine running.
2. Inspect to determine if any of the mechanical or electrical concerns apply:

VISUAL INSPECTION CHART

Mechanical
- Damaged fuel tank.
- Engine coolant level.
- Engine oil level.
- Accessory drive belt.

Electrical
- Fuses: 2 (5 A), 5 (5 A), 6 (15 A), 7 (10 A), 11 (5 A), 12 (5 A), 24 (5 A)
- Circuit wiring.
- Switches, sensors or modules.

3. If inspection reveals an obvious concern that can be readily serviced, correct the concern before continuing with Inspection and Verification.
4. If the concern remains after the inspection, use Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) Tester 418-F048 (007-00500) or equivalent to retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) by executing Self Test Diagnostics for the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
5. If self test is passed and no DTCs are retrieved, go to Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics. Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
6. If DTCs are retrieved go to the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. Generic Electronic Module (GEM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index
7. If the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) cannot be accessed by the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester, go to Pinpoint Test A. A: No Communications With Generic Electronic Module (GEM)

Rotunda Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) (R) 418-F001 (001-00001) may also be used to diagnose this system.

The Ford Car Master Parts catalog and the Lincoln/Mercury Parts and Accessories catalog show the proper speedometer/transaxle gears to use for various transaxle and tire size combinations. The correct gears must be used to comply with Federal law.
