Valve Spring: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove the valve cover as described and the applicable spark plug.

NOTE: Provided damage has not occurred, broken valve springs or damaged valve spring retainers may be replaced without removing the cylinder head.

2. Install an air line with an adapter in the spark plug hole and turn on the air supply. If the air pressure fails to hold the valve(s) closed while performing the following steps, valve or valve seat damage is indicated and the cylinder head must be removed.

CAUTION: Make sure the piston is at the bottom of its stroke with both valves closed. Any loss of air pressure will allow the valve(s) to fall into the cylinder. Use care to prevent accidentally dropping the valve into the cylinder. A rubber band, tape or string wrapped around the end of the valve stem will prevent this from happening but will still allow enough travel to check the valve for binds.

3. Remove rocker arms and valve tappets.

NOTE: Mark positions of rocker arms and valve tappets so that they can be installed in their original positions.

4. Position camshafts in cylinder heads and tighten cylinder head camshaft journal cap bolts.

5. Install Valve Spring Compressor 303-473 (T94P-6565-BH) as shown. Compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring retainer keys, valve spring retainer and valve spring.
6. Inspect valve spring, valve spring retainer keys and valve spring retainer. Replace worn or damaged parts as required.

7. Using Valve Stem Seal Remover 303-468 (T94P-6510-AH), remove valve stem seals.

INSTALLATION
1. Remove air pressure from spark plug adapter. Inspect the valve stem for damage. Rotate the valve and check the valve stem tip for eccentric movement during rotation. Move the valve up and down through normal travel in the valve guide and check the stem for binds.

CAUTION: If the valve has been damaged, it will be necessary to remove the cylinder head for service.

2. If the condition of the valve is satisfactory, apply Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A to the valve stem and hold the valve closed. Apply the air pressure within the cylinder.

3. Lubricate valve stems and guides with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A and using Valve Stem Seal Replacer 303-470 (T94P-6510-CH), install valve stem seals onto cylinder head valve guides.
4. Place the valve spring in position over the valve and install the valve spring retainer.
5. Compress valve spring using Valve Spring Compressor 303-473 (T94P-6565-BH) and install the valve spring retainer keys. Remove compressor tool.
6. Turn OFF the air pressure and remove the air line and adapter.
7. Install spark plugs.
8. Install valve tappets, camshafts and rocker arms in their original locations.
9. Install valve covers.
10. Run the engine and check for leaks.
