Rear Door Latch: Service and Repair

REMOVAL







1. Position window glass in the up position.
2. Remove rear door trim panel and watershield.
3. Check all hardware connections to rear door latch and inside door handle, including bellcrank and push button rod. Service as necessary.
4. Remove rear door push button rod.

CAUTION: Do not drive out the center of the bellcrank rivet, or the door sheet metal may be damaged. Drill the rivet or cut the head of the rivet to remove it.

5. Remove one rivet retaining rear door latch bellcrank to rear door.
6. Remove rear door latch control rod retainer from door by twisting with a flat-blade screwdriver.
7. Disconnect electrical connector for the door ajar switch.
8. Disconnect electrical connector for the adjunct power door latch actuator (if equipped).
9. Open retainer attaching outside door handle control rod to front door latch.
10. Remove three screws retaining rear door latch to rear door.
11. Feed latch and link rod forward in door far enough to twist and remove latch from link rod. Leave link rod in this position in vehicle. Remove door latch from vehicle.
12. Remove cable watershield and cable from door latch.







13. To remove door ajar switch, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry apart inner latch casing while twisting door ajar switch clockwise (for RH door latch) or counterclockwise (for LH door latch) until switch releases. Remove door ajar switch.







14. To remove adjunct door latch actuator, release tab on actuator and slide actuator off door latch.
15. Transfer components to new door latch as required.

INSTALLATION
1. Follow removal procedure in reverse order, with the following exceptions:
2. Replace rear door latch bellcrank pivot.
3. Use Heavy-Duty Riveter 501-D011 (D80L-23200-A) or equivalent to install rivet 391600-S417 that attaches bellcrank assembly to rear door.





4. Tighten rear door latch retaining screws to 10-14 Nm (89-123 lb-in).
