Fuel Gauge Sender: Description and Operation

NOTE: The fuel gauge instrument cluster gauge amplifier, and engine coolant temperature gauge are calibrated to each other at the manufacturing facility and must all be replaced if any one is damaged.

The fuel level indication system is a magnetic-type indication system, which consists of:
- fuel level sensor (part of the fuel pump module).
- instrument cluster gauge amplifier.
- fuel gauge/temperature assembly.

FUEL LEVEL SENSOR
- The fuel pump module and pump assembly contain a variable resistor controlled by the level of an attached float in the fuel tank.
- When the fuel level is low, resistance in the fuel pump module is low and movement of the fuel gauge indicator pointer is minimal (from EMPTY position).
- When the fuel level is high, the resistance in the fuel pump module is high and gauge indicator pointer movement is greater (further from the EMPTY position).
