Scan Tool Testing and Procedures
VEHICLE SET UP1. Perform the following steps prior to performing any New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester Driven Diagnostics:
a. Shift transaxle to PARK.
b. Apply parking brake.
c. Make sure all switches and controls are in the OFF position.
d. Hook up New Generation STAR Tester.
e. Close all doors, hood and luggage compartment door or liftgate.
f. Do not sit in driver seat.
g. Turn ignition switch to RUN.
2. Perform vehicle selection.
NOTE: Do not operate any handle, control or switch that may produce a module input unless instructed to do so by New Generation STAR program.
3. Perform Diagnostic Data Link test.
a. If diagnostic data link test passed and concern(s) remains, go to Step 4.
b. If diagnostic data link test did not pass, go to Communication Systems Diagnostics. Component Tests and General Diagnostics
4. Retrieve continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from selected module.
5. Record all continuous DTCs.
6. Clear all continuous DTCs from selected module.
7. Perform On-Demand Self Test procedure for selected module.
NOTE: The on-demand self test program for an individual module may produce observable outputs.
8. Record all on-demand DTCs.
a. If DTCs are retrieved, go to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index of the selected module to continue diagnostics.
b. If no DTCs are retrieved (on-demand self test passed) and concern(s) remains, go to Step 9.
9. If continuous DTCs were recorded in Step 5, go to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index of the selected module to continue diagnosis for all continuous DTCs. If no continuous DTCs were retrieved, concern is not related to multiplex or ISO 9141 communication network(s) and is not a module monitored function; return to referred system Symptom Chart for non-network related concern.
WIGGLE TEST
The wiggle test is designed to help identify and locate intermittent failures in the vehicle wiring harness and system components. Upon entering wiggle test, several inputs and outputs of the module are monitored for change of state. When a state change is encountered, an audible tone can be heard and/or a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be displayed on New Generation Star (NGS) Tester. For modules which store DTCs, the DTC description will determine an open circuit, short to ground or a short to B+. By initiating wiggle test and pulling on different areas of the vehicle harness, intermittent open and short circuits can be located and repaired.
1. Hook up New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester.
NOTE: The ignition switch must be in RUN position or test will fail.
2. Rotate dial to menu item "Diagnostic Data Link" and press trigger.
3. Select module to test by rotating dial to highlight module and press trigger.
4. Menu item "Diagnostic Test Modes" is highlighted. Press trigger.
5. Rotate dial to highlight menu item "Wiggle Test." Press trigger, then press start (Button 3).
