Intermediate Shaft
Removal
1. NOTE: Use an Allen key to stop the piston rod from turning.
Loosen the right - hand suspension strut locknut five turns.
2. Loosen the right - hand front wheel nuts.
3. Raise and support the vehicle.
4. Remove the right - hand front wheel.
5. Remove the fender splash shields (right - hand side shown).
6. CAUTION: Do not damage boot and ABS sensor ring
Disconnect the lower right - hand suspension arm ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
- Disconnect the ABS wiring harness bracket from the suspension strut.
7. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
Using the special tools, remove the right - hand halfshaft.
8. NOTE: Collect escaping oil.
Remove the intermediate shaft.
- Close off the transmission opening with a Plug for transaxle opening.
Installation
All Vehicles
1. CAUTION: Do not damage the oil seal.
CAUTION: If an intermediate shaft bracket with two sets of holes (one set for automatic transaxle application and one set for manual transaxle application) is installed, install the mounting bolts into the correct holes.
NOTE: Use new nuts.
Install the intermediate shaft.
2. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
NOTE: Install a new snap ring.
Install the right - hand halfshaft.
- Check that the snap ring engages correctly.
3. CAUTION: Do not damage boot and ABS sensor ring.
Connect the lower right - hand suspension arm ball joint to the wheel knuckle.
- Attach the ABS wiring harness bracket to the suspension strut.
4. Install the fender splash shields (right - hand side shown).
5. Install the right - hand front wheel.
Vehicles with manual transaxle
6. NOTE: The fill level is 0 - 5 mm below the lower edge of the filler hole.
Check the transmission fluid level and fill with Manual transmission fluid.
All Vehicles
7. Lower the vehicle and tighten the left - hand front wheel nuts.
8. Tighten the right - hand suspension strut locknut.
- Use an Allen key as back - stop.
- Tighten finger - tight using ring spanner.
- Tighten to torque specification using torque wrench.
Vehicles with automatic transaxle
9. Fill the automatic transaxle with MERCON Multi-purpose automatic transmission fluid.
