Service Procedure
Refer to Figure 1, specifically the area pointed out by the arrow to identify chafing area.
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Remove the RH engine lifting eye. This can be accomplished from under the vehicle using a 61 mm (24") extension with a flex socket.
3. Carefully unzip the plastic wrap surrounding the -12A581- harness. Retain plastic wrap for reinstallation.
4. Carefully inspect the plastic wrap. If it is damaged (tear or hole due to chafing), continue to Step 5; otherwise go to Step 6.
5. Inspect all wires around the lifting eye area and the Vapor Management Valve (VMV) service port valve. Determine chafing by visual inspection of all circuits. You may wish to use a mirror to aid inspection. Chafing is defined as any visible damage to the wire/circuit insulation. Repair non-shielded circuits by following procedures found in the 1998 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual and TSB 98-11-3. If the damaged circuit is a shielded wire, the harness must be replaced.
NOTE
REPLACE THE HARNESS ONLY IF SHIELDED WIRES ARE DAMAGED.
NOTE
IF PLASTIC 15/16" WRAP IS DAMAGED, YOU MAY USE CONVOLUTE TUBING (AVAILABLE IN BULK, BASE PART NUMBER -14A199-) TO REPLACE THE PLASTIC WRAP AS NEEDED.
6. Reinstall plastic wrap and secure harness in the original location.
7. Refer to the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual and perform normal diagnostic procedures for the specific DTC found in memory. Repair as necessary.
