Service Procedure

(REFERENCE 1997 CONTOUR/MYSTIQUE SERVICE MANUAL, SECTION 07-01)

1. Obtain CD4E Servo Cover Remover/Replacer Tool (T94P-77000-L), the necessary servo parts identified in the table which appears after these procedures, and a drain pan for Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).

2. Raise the vehicle on hoist. (Refer to Section 00-02 of the Service Manual.)

WARNING
THE CD4E SERVO COVER MAY HAVE SOME RESIDUAL PRESSURE BEHIND IT.

NOTE
DO NOT FOLLOW THE SERVICE MANUAL TIP WHICH RECOMMENDS INSTALLING A NUT WITH AN INTEGRAL WASHER ONTO THE TOOL'S (T94P-77000-L) FORCING BOLT. THE NUT RESTRICTS RETRACTION OF THE BOLT SUFFICIENTLY TO PERMIT INSTALLATION OF THE TOOL.

3. The CD4E servo is located on the bottom of the transmission toward the front LH side of the vehicle.

4. Remove the transmission cooler line bracket bolt from the CD4E pump body (located on the LH side of vehicle).

5. Install the Servo Cover Remover/Replacer Tool (T94P-77000-L) by sliding one end of the tool up between the LH subframe and the transmission. While maneuvering the end of the tool up and into position for being secured by the cooler line bracket bolt which was removed (Step 4), insert the "doweled" tool end into a bottom-side CD4E case boss near the split flange. With one end of the tool pressed into the case boss, secure the other end to the CD4E pump body cooler line bracket attaching hole using the bolt removed (Step 4). The tool should now be in position with the servo cover forcing bolt located in-line with the middle of the servo cover.

6. Position the ATF drain pan under the CD4E case servo bore.

7. Compress the servo cover by turning the tools forcing bolt.

8. Remove the servo cover retaining ring.

9. Back oft the tool's forcing bolt slowly, allowing pressure behind the cover to be relieved.

10. Remove the CD4E Servo Cover Remover/Replacer Tool.

11. Remove and discard the existing servo cover, servo rod assembly, and servo return spring (note the number of identification grooves on the servo rod).

12. Remove ATF drain pan.

13. Select a Servo Rod Assembly with Cushion Spring (F4RZ-7H188-) based on the CD4E Servo Parts Listing found in this TSB article and having the same number of "identification grooves" which appear on the removed servo rod assembly.

NOTE
THE MOST FREQUENTLY SELECTED ROD IS THE 1-GROOVE ROD.

14. Lubricate the new servo rod assembly's piston seal with a light coat of ATF.

15. Install the new Servo Return Spring (F3RZ-7H073-A) and new Servo Rod Assembly (F4RZ-7H188-) into the CD4E case servo bore.

16. Lubricate the new Servo Cover And Seal (F4RZ-7D027-A) and case servo bore with a light coat of ATF.

17. Install the new servo cover into the case servo bore.

18. Again, install the Servo Cover Remover/Replacer Tool (T94P-77000-L) (Step 5).

19. Compress the servo cover into the case servo bore enough to expose the retaining ring case groove.

NOTE
IF THE SERVO COVER WILL NOT SEAT DEEP ENOUGH INTO THE BORE TO PERMIT RETAINING RING INSTALLATION, USE A BLUNT PUNCH AND SMALL HAMMER TO GENTLY TAP THE COVER'S OUTER EDGE UNTIL THE RETAINING RING CAN BE INSTALLED.

20. Install the servo cover retaining ring making sure the ring is fully seated into the case groove.

21. Remove the Servo Cover Remover/Replacer Tool.

22. Reposition and align cooler line bracket hole with bolt hole of pump body and tighten bracket bolt.

23. Lower vehicle.

24. Reprogram the PCM using the July 1998 or later CD-ROM, Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS), or New Generation Star (NGS) Tester. Refer to the Recalibration Cross Reference Chart found in this TSB article for the correct PCM calibration.

NOTE
PCM REPLACEMENT IS NOT AUTHORIZED BY THIS TSB. REFER TO THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL/EMISSIONS DIAGNOSIS (PC/ED) SERVICE MANUAL FOR APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES IF PCM HARDWARE CONCERNS EXIST.

25. Check transmission fluid level and top off with MERCON(R) ATF as required.

26. Road test vehicle as final repair verification.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal (FPS 8262 - obtainable through DOES II, 25/pkg) and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
