Differential: Service and Repair
Special Tools:
DISASSEMBLY
1. Install Pinion and Carrier Bearing Puller.
1 Install Differential Bearing Cone Replacer and tapered insert.
2 Install Pinion and Carrier Bearing Puller.
2. Install Pinion and Carrier Bearing Puller half shells.
3. Preload the bearing and remove it.
4. Repeat for the other side.
5. Remove the speedometer drive gear by gently prying it off.
6. Remove the gear.
- Unscrew the bolts.
- Disconnect the gear by tapping lightly on it.
ASSEMBLY
1. Carefully clean and check all parts and lubricate them with Motorcraft MERCON Multi-purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting MERCON specification. MERCON(R) automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON(R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.
NOTE: Do not oil taper roller bearings which are to be used again. New taper roller bearings can be fitted without any treatment.
2. Install the gear to the differential.
- Tighten the bolts, working diagonally.
3. Install the bearing.
1 Install the speedometer worm gear.
2 Install the bearing using Differential Bearing Cone Replacer and Driver Handle.
NOTE: The speedometer worm gear must engage in the housing recess.
