COOLING SYSTEM - REVISED WATER PUMP
REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE - 2.0L ZETEC ENGINES

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to revise the torque specification in Step 1 of the Installation Procedure and to include a Labor Operation and Time.

ISSUE
A revised repair procedure for 1998-99 Contour/Mystique water pump replacement has been developed.

ACTION
If water pump replacement is required, refer to the following Service Procedure for removal and installation details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

REMOVAL

1. Install a Memory Saver.

2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in the 1998 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual, Section 303-03.

4. Remove the right front wheel assembly.

5. Remove the RH lower splash shield.

6. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.

7. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the belt.

8. Using Strap Wrench D85L-6000-A to prevent engine from rotating, remove the crankshaft pulley.

9. Remove the water pump pulley.

10. Remove the four (4) water pump bolts.

11. Remove the water pump.

INSTALLATION

1. Position the water pump and install the bolts. Torque the bolts to 10 N.m (8 lb-ft).

2. Position the water pump pulley and install the bolts finger tight.

3. Install the crankshaft pulley and torque the bolt to 115 N.m (85 lb-ft).

4. Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise and install the accessory drive belt.

5. Torque the water pump pulley bolts to 24 N.m (18 lb-ft).

6. Install the splash shield.

7. Install the wheel assembly.

8. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in the Workshop Manual, Section 303-03.
