With Manual Transmission
NOTE: Ford does not provide camshaft gear timing marks, or information to perform timing belt service without the special tools shown in this procedure.
1. Put the gear lever into neutral.
2. Use the special tool to lock the gear lever in neutral.
- Unclip the boot from the gear lever and insert the aligning tool.
3. Raise and support the vehicle.
4. Remove both front wheels.
5. Remove the radiator splash shield and remove the brace on both sides (left-hand side shown).
WARNING: When the engine is hot there is a risk of scalding.
6. Drain the coolant.
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Remove the battery.
9. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
1 Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) connector.
2 Disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor connector.
3 Remove the one bolt, two nuts.
4 Disconnect the two clips.
- Remove the air cleaner outlet tube (push fit).
10. Remove the air cleaner body.
1 Remove the crankcase ventilation hose.
2 Remove the air cleaner inlet tube.
3 Unhook the rubber ring.
- Pull the air cleaner body out pulling upwards (push fit).
11. Use mechanic's wire to secure the air conditioning condenser on the hood lock panel.
12. Loosen the suspension strut locknuts five turns.
- Hold the suspension strut steady.
13. Disconnect the wiring.
1 Disconnect the engine wiring harness connector.
2 Disconnect the automatic transmission ground cable.
3 Remove the cable tie.
WARNING: Brake fluid may leak out. Observe the safety procedures for handling brake fluid.
14. Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder.
1 Pull out the clip and pull off the pipe.
2 Disconnect the slave cylinder pipe from the transmission and tie it up.
- Disconnect the ground cable from the transmission.
15. Disconnect the accelerator cable.
1 Pull out the clip.
2 Unhook the cable.
16. Remove the upper drive belt cover.
17. Install the 3-Bar Engine Support.
18. Raise and support the vehicle.
19. Remove the splash shields.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the splash shields.
20. Remove the accessory drive belt.
1 Turn the belt tensioner clockwise.
2 Remove the accessory drive belt.
21. Disconnect the front wheel suspension on both sides (left-hand side shown).
1 Remove the stabilizer bar link.
2 Use Tie Rod End Remover to disconnect the tie-rod end.
3 Remove the suspension arm.
- Pull the brake hose out of the bracket.
22. Disconnect the radiator at the bottom and disconnect both heated oxygen sensor (H02S) electrical connectors.
23. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the subframe.
24. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum line from the intake manifold.
- Disconnect the quick-release coupling and pull out the line.
25. Disconnect the RH side of the steering gear using Steering Rack Socket Wrench and the right-hand engine roll restrictor.
1 Disconnect the steering gear and secure it with mechanic's wire out of the way.
2 Disconnect the roll restrictor from the bracket.
3 Disconnect the roll restrictor from the subframe.
26. Disconnect the bracket for the right-hand engine roll restrictor from the transmission.
27. Remove the steering gear heat shield.
28. Disconnect the front exhaust tube and unhook it.
- Remove the gasket.
NOTE: If necessary raise the transaxle slightly with 3-Bar Engine Support.
29. Remove the left-hand engine roll restrictor.
1 Remove the nuts.
2 Remove the center through bolt.
30. Disconnect the air conditioning accumulator from the subframe.
WARNING: Support the subframe using Powertrain Lift.
31. Remove the subframe.
- Take out the rubber guides from the lower radiator supports.
32. Drain the transmission fluid.
- Reinstall the drain plug.
33. Remove the front axle driveshaft.
34. Disconnect the coolant hose from the heater coolant tube and remove the bracket.
35. Disconnect the lower coolant hose.
36. Lower the vehicle.
37. Disconnect the two ground cables.
38. Disconnect and remove the upper coolant hose.
39. Remove the coolant hose bracket and the power steering hose.
40. Remove the upper bolts from the power steering pump, remove the wiring clamp from the fender apron panel and remove the coolant hoses.
41. Raise and support the vehicle.
42. Disconnect the air conditioning compressor electrical connector.
43. Separate the radiator from the condenser.
1 Disconnect the electrical connector from the fan motor ballast resistor.
2 Remove one bolt on each side.
- Lower the radiator to remove.
44. Disconnect the air conditioning compressor and secure it out of the way with mechanic's wire.
45. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
46. Remove the bolts and position the power steering pump out of the way.
47. Disconnect the heater coolant hose.
48. Lower the vehicle.
NOTE: Press the adjustment mechanism in until it clicks in place.
49. Disconnect the shift cables from the transaxle.
1 Disconnect the shift cable from the gear shift lever.
2 Release the abutment bracket by twisting it counter-clockwise and remove the cable from the bracket.
3 Disconnect the shift cable from the gear selector lever.
4 Release the abutment bracket by twisting it counter-clockwise and remove the cable from the bracket.
5 Release the adjustment mechanism by pressing it
50. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM).
1 Take out the power steering reservoir (push fit) and lay it to one side.
2 Disconnect the wiring bracket.
3 Disconnect the two ground cables.
4 Disconnect the main wiring harness connector from the PCM.
51. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the intake manifold.
52. Disconnect the battery leads and connectors, and cut the cable ties.
53. Relieve the fuel pressure.
54. Disconnect the fuel lines.
55. Raise and support the vehicle.
56. Carefully lower the vehicle and place the engine/transmission assembly on Powertrain Lift or equivalent and secure it with retaining straps.
57. Disconnect the coolant recovery tank and lay it to one side.
58. Remove the front engine mounting bracket.
1 Remove the nuts.
2 Loosen the bolts two turns.
59. Remove the rear engine mounting bracket.
60. Raise the vehicle and pull out Powertrain Fixture or equivalent with the engine/transaxle assembly from underneath the vehicle.
61. Move the engine/transaxle assembly using Spreader Bar and Engine Lifting Bracket and a workshop hoist and secure the transaxle with retaining straps to the Powertrain Fixture or equivalent.
62. Disconnect the plugs from the reversing lamp switch and the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
63. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
64. Remove the upper transaxle flange bolts.
- Remove the upper starter motor bolts.
- Remove the two flange bolts.
- Disconnect the ground cable from the transaxle.
65. Remove the transaxle flange bolts on the right-hand side of the transaxle and the lower starter motor bolt.
- Remove the starter motor and the wiring harness.
66. Remove the flange bolts on the left-hand side of the transaxle.
67. Separate the transaxle from the engine.
