With Automatic Transmission
NOTE: Ford does not provide camshaft gear timing marks, or information to perform timing belt service without the special tools shown in this procedure.
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove both front wheels.
3. Remove the radiator splash shield and remove the brace on both sides (left-hand side shown).
WARNING: Risk of scalding when the engine is at operating temperature.
4. Drain the coolant.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Remove the battery.
7. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.
1 Disconnect the mass air flow (MAP) connector.
2 Disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor connector.
3 Remove the one bolt and two nuts.
4 Disconnect the two clips.
- Take out the air cleaner outlet tube (push fit).
8. Remove the air cleaner body.
1 Remove the crankcase ventilation hose.
2 Remove the air cleaner inlet tube.
3 Unhook the rubber ring.
- Pull the air cleaner body out, pulling upwards (push fit).
9. Use mechanic's wire to secure the air conditioning condenser on the hood lock panel.
10. Loosen the suspension strut locknuts five turns.
- Hold the suspension strut steady.
11. Disconnect the wiring.
1 Disconnect the engine wiring harness connector.
2 Disconnect the automatic transmission ground cable.
3 Remove the cable tie.
12. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
1 Disconnect the automatic transmission control plug electrical connector.
2 Unclip the wiring harness.
3 Disconnect the transmission range (TR) switch electrical connector.
13. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
1 Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
2 Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
14. Disconnect the selector cable.
1 Remove the selector cable mounting bracket bolts.
2 Unclip the selector cable from the selector levee
15. Disconnect the accelerator cable.
1 Pull out the clip.
2 Unhook the cable.
16. Remove the upper drive belt cover.
17. Install 3-Bar Engine Support.
18. Raise and support the vehicle.
19. Remove the splash shields.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the splash shields.
20. Remove the accessory drive belt.
1 Turn the belt tensioner clockwise.
2 Remove the accessory drive belt.
21. Disconnect the front wheel suspension on both sides (left-hand side shown).
1 Remove the stabilizer bar link.
2 Use Tie Rod End Remover to disconnect the tie-rod end.
3 Remove the suspension arm.
- Pull the brake hose out of the bracket.
22. Disconnect the radiator at the bottom and disconnect both heated oxygen sensor (H02S) electrical connectors.
23. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the subframe.
24. Remove the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
- Remove the retaining bracket (one bolt).
- Close off the opening.
25. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum line from the intake manifold.
- Disconnect the quick-release coupling and pull out the line.
26. Remove the right-hand engine roll restrictor.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the center through bolt.
27. Remove the steering gear heat shield.
- Remove the power steering line bracket and the coolant line bracket.
28. Disconnect the front exhaust tube and unhook it.
- Discard the gasket.
29. Disconnect the steering gear (two bolts) with the Steering Rack Socket Wrench and secure it with mechanic's wire (left-hand side shown).
NOTE: If necessary raise the automatic transaxle slightly with 3-Bar Engine Support.
30. Remove the left-hand engine roll restrictor.
1 Remove the nuts.
2 Remove the center through bolt.
31. Disconnect the air conditioning accumulator from the subframe.
WARNING: Support the subframe using Powertrain Lift.
32. Remove the subframe.
- Take out the rubber guides from the lower radiator supports.
33. Drain the automatic transmission fluid..
- Reinstall the drain plug.
34. Remove the front axle driveshafts.
35. Disconnect the fluid tube.
- Close off the openings with suitable plugs.
36. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.
- Unclip the wiring.
37. Disconnect the fluid cooler tube from the transaxle.
- Close off the opening with a suitable plug.
38. Disconnect the coolant hose from the heater coolant tube and remove the bracket.
39. Disconnect the lower coolant hose.
40. Lower the vehicle.
41. Disconnect the two ground cables.
42. Disconnect the hoses from the transaxle oil cooler.
43. Disconnect the power steering pressure (PSP) switch and fan motor electrical connectors and the upper coolant hose.
1 Disconnect the fan motor electrical connector.
2 Disconnect PSP switch electrical connector.
3 Unclip the wiring harnesses.
44. Remove the coolant hose bracket and the power steering line.
45. Remove the upper bolts from the power steering pump, remove the wiring clamp from the fender apron panel and remove the coolant hoses.
46. Raise and support the vehicle.
47. Disconnect the air conditioning compressor electrical connector.
48. Separate the radiator from the condenser.
1 Disconnect the electrical connector from the fan motor ballast resistor.
2 Remove one bolt on each side.
- Lower the radiator to remove.
49. Disconnect the air conditioning compressor and secure it out of the way with mechanic's wire.
50. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
51. Remove the bolts and position the power steering pump out of the way.
52. Disconnect the heater coolant hose.
53. Lower the vehicle.
54. Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM).
1 Take out the power steering reservoir (push fit) and lay it to one side.
2 Disconnect the wiring bracket.
3 Disconnect the two ground cables.
4 Disconnect the main wiring harness connector from the PCM.
55. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the intake manifold.
56. Disconnect the battery leads and connectors, and cut the cable ties.
57. Relieve the fuel pressure.
58. Disconnect the fuel lines.
- Take off the retaining clips.
59. Raise and support the vehicle.
60. Carefully lower the vehicle and place the engine/transmission assembly on Powertrain Lift and secure it with retaining straps.
61. Remove the coolant recovery tank and lay it to one side.
62. Remove the front engine mounting bracket.
1 Remove the nuts.
2 Loosen the bolts two turns.
63. Remove the rear engine mounting bracket.
64. Raise the vehicle and pull out Powertrain Fixture or equivalent with the engine/automatic transaxle assembly from underneath the vehicle.
65. Move the engine/automatic transaxle assembly using Spreader Bar and Engine Lifting Brackets and a workshop hoist and secure the automatic transaxle with retaining straps to Powertrain Fixture or equivalent.
66. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
67. Remove the starter motor.
68. Disconnect the torque converter from the engine drive plate (four nuts).
- Remove the plastic cover.
69. Remove the transaxle flange bolts on the right-hand side.
70. Remove the transaxle upper flange bolts.
71. Remove the transaxle flange bolts on the left-hand side.
WARNING: Do not let the torque converter drop out of the transmission.
72. Separate the automatic transaxle from the engine.
