Valve Spring Shim: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Remove the camshafts,
CAUTION: If the camshafts and the valve tappets are to be reused, mark the location of the valve tappets.
2. Remove the valve tappets.
3. Inspect the valve tappets.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION: If the camshafts and valve tappets are to be reused, make sure the valve tappets are installed in their original locations.
1. Lubricate the valve tappet with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent and install the valve tappet.
2. Install the camshafts.
1 Install the exhaust camshaft with the oil feed flange.
2 Install the exhaust camshaft.
3 Install the bearing caps.
3. Follow the torque sequence and tighten the bearing caps.
CAUTION: Only rotate the engine by rotating the crankshaft.
4. Rotate the crankshaft until the camshaft reaches the base circle and measure the valve clearance with a feeler gauge.
- Repeat for all valves and note the measurement.
5. If the required valve clearances are not obtained, remove the camshafts.
- Intake valve clearance (0.11-0.18 mm).
- Exhaust valve clearance (0.27-0.34 mm).
6. Measure and insert the shim of the required thickness.
- Intake valve: required shim = current shim + measured clearance - 0.15 mm.
- Exhaust valve: required shim = current shim + measured clearance - 0.30 mm.
7. Install the camshaft.
