^ NOISE - "WHISTLING" OR "HOOTING" WINDNOISE AT UPPER A-PILLAR AREA

FORD:
1997 ESCORT

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1997 TRACER

ISSUE:
A "whistling" and/or "hooting" noise may be heard from the upper A-pillar area at speeds of 105 km/h (65 mph) and greater on some vehicles. This may be caused by the windshield moulding lifting slightly, creating a vacuum and causing the noise.

ACTION:
Install a foam pad under the moulding. The foam pad should reduce the possibility of noise by filling the gap created if the moulding raises. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Starting at the top ditch moulding area, lift up the primary (outer) lip using a tongue depressor-type tool. Insert foam pad into the cavity under the primary lip Refer to Figure 1.

2. Using the tongue depressor tool, push the foam pad under the moulding from the ditch area to the base area (102 mm/4" from the bottom).

3. Make sure the foam pad is stuffed well into the cavity under the moulding so that the moulding will seat properly.
