Flushing

NOTE: If contamination is found during the steering gear removal and installation, the power steering pump should be flushed.

1. Raise and support the vehicle.





2. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose at the steering gear.
3. Place the end of the power steering pressure hose in a suitable container.
4. Lower the vehicle. The wheels should be above the ground.





5. Fill the power steering pump reservoir with Mercon(R) ATF (power steering fluid) or equivalent.





6. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.
7. Engage the starter motor while approximately 1.9 liters (2 quarts) of power steering fluid is poured into the power steering pump reservoir.

CAUTION: Do not operate the starter motor for more than 15 seconds at a time. Damage to the starter motor could result.

8. Turn off the ignition once the fluid has been added.
9. Raise and support the vehicle.





10. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear.
11. Lower the vehicle. The wheels should be above the ground.
12. Check the reservoir fluid level and add fluid if necessary.
13. Crank the engine with the starter motor and continue adding fluid until the level remains constant.

CAUTION: Do not operate the starter motor for more than 15 seconds at a time. Damage to the starter motor could result.





14. Connect the ignition coil connector.





15. Start the engine and cycle the steering wheel from stop-to-stop to expel any air from the system.
