AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC MONITOR WATER SHIELD KIT INSTALLATIONAFFECTED VEHICLES:
CERTAIN 1997 ESCORT AND TRACER
OVERVIEW
This procedure details the installation of a water shield kit to protect the monitor from a possible leak into the passenger compartment.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Open the hood and disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the four (4) push pins (2 each side) from the shift console panel. See Figure 1.
3. Gently pull the forward edge of the shift console panel out to gain access to and remove the push pins securing the left and right side control box side covers. See Figure 2.
4. Disconnect the two (2) air bag diagnostic monitor electrical connectors.
5. Loosen the two (2) monitor retaining nuts on the left side of the monitor. Remove the one (1) retaining nut from the right side then remove the monitor from the vehicle.
6. Position the clear plastic water shield over the monitor so the bottom flap wraps around the monitor. See Figure 3.
7. Using the supplied tie strap, secure the shield to the monitor. Pull the tie strap as tight as possible by hand, then cut off the end of the strap as illustrated. See Figure 4.
8. Install the monitor. Be sure the tie strap does not interfere with proper seating of the monitor. Tighten the attaching nuts to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
9. Thoroughly coat the monitor electrical connector with an ample amount of Ford Electrical Grease to protect against water intrusion. See Figure 5.
10. Connect both harness connectors to the monitor. Then, thoroughly coat the wires/cavity entrances (at the back of the connectors) with an ample amount of Ford Electrical Grease to protect against water intrusion. See Figure 6.
11. Install the control box side covers and secure with push pins.
12. Install the push pins to secure the shift console panel.
13. Connect the battery negative cable and close the hood.
14. Turn the ignition switch from the OFF to the RUN position and visually monitor the air bag indicator. The air bag indicator should light continuously for approximately six seconds and then turn off. If an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault is present, the air bag indicator will either:
^ fail to light.
^ remain lit continuously.
^ flash.
The flashing might not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned from the OFF to the RUN position. This is the time required for the restraints control module (RCM) to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag indicator is inoperative and an SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of five sets of five beeps. If this occurs, the air bag indicator will need to be repaired before diagnosis can continue. Refer to the appropriate workshop manual for diagnosis.
