Diagnosing Customer Concerns w/out Hard Fault Codes

CAUTION: Following a Pinpoint Test when the code is not flashing will result in needless replacement of air bag system components and repeat service.

If a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is reported by the customer but is not present when the vehicle comes in for repair, pinpoint test diagnostics cannot be used. The air bag diagnostic monitor does not contain any memory of the DTC after the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position.

If the DTC is not known, instruct the customer on how to count a diagnostic trouble code. Demonstrate by disconnecting a component (such as the front air bag sensor and bracket and allow the customer to read the DTC.

Once the DTC is known, read the "Normal Operation" section of the Pinpoint Test for the DTC. Then, perform the following steps:

- Determine the location of components involved in setting the DTC

- Study the electrical circuit diagram

- Do a thorough visual inspection of:
Components
Connectors
Splices and wiring harnesses
Pinched wires
Worn insulation on conductors
Opens, shorts, or loosely mounted sensors.

Refer to the "Possible Causes" portion of the Pinpoint Test that lists the common concerns relating to a particular DTC. Causes are listed in the order they are most likely to occur.
