Reading DTCs Using Air Bag Warning Indicator

NOTE: If the air bag warning indicator is inoperative the air bag diagnostic monitor will sound five sets of five tones. This does not indicate a DTC 55. It indicates that a concern exists and the air bag warning indicator is inoperative. This must be corrected before any other diagnosis can continue. Refer to the Diagnosis by Symptom for further actions.

If the air bag warning indicator flashes a DTC, the two-digit number can be read as follows:

1. The first digit will be a flash or flashes followed by a one-second pause.

2. The second digit will be a flash or flashes followed by a three-second pause. This completes the first DTC.
For example, if DTC 32 were retrieved, it could be read by doing the following:
a. Turn key ON.
b. Air bag warning indicator will illuminate for six seconds for normal prove out of the bulb.
c. Wait up to 45 seconds for DTC retrieval to begin. This is the time necessary for the air bag diagnostic monitor to test the system.
d. Three flashes would occur, followed by a one-second pause, indicating the first digit of "3".
e. Two flashes would occur, followed by a three-second pause, indicating the second digit of "2". This is the DTC 32.
f. If any other DTC existed, they would now flash out. Otherwise, the following two steps would repeat to flash out a DTC 32 again.

3. If another fault exists, it will flash out after the three-second pause.

4. Once all DTCs have flashed out, they will repeat again, starting with the first DTC retrieved.
