EXHAUST - EXHAUST NOISE FROM BEHIND INSTRUMENT PANEL OR REAR OF ENGINE - 2.0L VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 9/1/96

FORD:
1997 ESCORT

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1997 TRACER

ISSUE:
An exhaust noise may be heard from behind the instrument panel and/or from the rear of the engine. This may be caused by resonance within the rubber Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) hoses.

ACTION:
Replace the rubber EGR hoses with steel lines. The steel lines should reduce the resonance within the lines.

Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify the "exhaust type" noise from behind the instrument panel is in the 2200-2500 rpm range under moderate to heavy engine load.





2. Verify the EGR hoses are made of black rubber material for their entire length. Refer to Figure 1. If the hoses are made of steel with rubber connectors on each end, go to Step 4.

3. If the vehicle is equipped with black rubber hoses, replace with steel EGR Pressure Lines (F7CZ-9P761-CA).

NOTE:
LARGER DIAMETER HOSE SHOULD BE INSTALLED ONTO THE REAR PORT OF THE EGR PRESSURE SENSOR.

4. If the vehicle already is equipped with steel lines and rubber connectors, perform normal diagnosis for exhaust/manifold system leaks.
