Compressor Shaft Seal: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove the A/C clutch from the A/C compressor.
2. Use (A) O-Ring Tool T71P-19703-C to remove the (B) shaft seal felt from the nose of the A/C compressor.
3. Clean the compressor nose area.
4. Use (A) Snap Ring Remover T89P-19623-DH to remove the (B) shaft seal snap ring.
5. Engage (A) Shaft Seal Remover T89P-19623-BH into the (B) internal diameter of the shaft seal.
6. Turn the tool handle clockwise to expand the tool tip inside of the shaft seal.
7. Pull the tool handle and seal from the compressor.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean the compressor nose area.
CAUTION: Do not allow dirt or other foreign materials to enter the compressor.
2. Position the (A) shaft seal on (B) Shaft Seal Protector T89P-19623-CH.
NOTE: Obtain a new A/C Compressor Shaft Seal Kit. Carefully remove the contents of the kit and inspect the plastic shaft seal protector for burrs or other damage. Do not use if it is damaged.
3. Lubricate Shaft Seal Protector T89P-19623-CH and the shaft seal.
NOTE: Use Motorcraft YN-12b Refrigerant Oil or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSH-M1C231-B.
4. Position the shaft seal and the Shaft Seal Protector over the compressor shaft.
5. Use Shaft Seal Replacer T89P-19623-AH to install the seal.
6. Remove Shaft Seal Replacer T89P-19623-AH and Shaft Seal Protector T89P-19623-CH.
7. Install a new shaft seal snap ring.
8. Conduct a leak test.
9. Install a new shaft seal felt in the compressor nose.
10. Install the A/C clutch on the A/C compressor.
11. Check and adjust the air gap as necessary.
12. Leak-test the A/C system.
