Oil Leak Diagnosis

DESCRIPTION
When repairing engine oil leaks, it is important that the source and location of the leak be positively identified before service. The following procedures have been found to be very effective and requires minimum equipment. Prior to using this inspection, it is important to clean the cylinder block, cylinder heads, valve cover, oil pan, and flywheel housing areas with a suitable solvent to remove all traces of oil. To perform oil leak diagnosis use Rotunda Oil Leak Detector 164-R0756 or equivalent, perform the following procedure.

FLUORESCENT OIL ADDITIVE METHOD
1. Clean the engine with a suitable solvent to remove all traces of oil.
2. Drain the engine oil crankcase and refill it with recommended oil, premixed with Fluorescent Oil Additive. Use a minimum 15ml (1/2 oz) to a maximum 30ml (1 oz) of fluorescent additive. If oil is not premixed, fluorescent additive must be added to crankcase first.
3. Run the engine for 15 minutes. Stop the engine and inspect all seal and gasket areas for leaks using Rotunda Oil Leak Detector 164-R0756 or equivalent. A clear bright yellow or orange area will identify the leak. For extremely small leaks, several hours of running the engine may be required for the leak to appear.
4. Service all leaks as required.

LEAKAGE POINTS
Examine the following areas for oil leakage:
Underhood
^ Valve cover gasket (6584).
^ Head gasket (6051).
^ Intake Manifold Gasket.
^ Oil level indicator tube (6754).
^ Engine Block Plug (6026) at end of oil passages.
^ Oil pressure sensor (9278).

Under Engine - With Vehicle Raised And Supported
^ Oil pan gasket (6710).
^ Crankshaft rear oil seal (6701).
^ Crankshaft front seal (6700).
^ Oil filter.
^ Oil Pressure Sensor (9278).

With Transaxle And Flywheel Removed

NOTE:
Leakage at Flywheel Bolts
Inspect for leakage in the area around the crankshaft rear oil seal and flywheel/flex plate bolts. If the leakage is from the flywheel/flex plate bolts, apply Pipe Sealant with Teflon D8AZ-19554-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G350-A2 to the threads and tighten to specification.

Valve Cover And Crankshaft Leakage
Light leakage equally around valve cover bolts and crankshaft seals is not detrimental; no repairs are required.

^ Crankshaft rear oil seal.
^ Crankshaft rear oil seal retainer gasket (6344).
^ Oil pan gasket (6710).
^ Flywheel bolts.
^ Oil gallery plugs at the end of oil passages.
^ Inspect all cast parts for leakage due to porosity.

Testing With the Leakage Tester
Oil leaks can be located by using the Cylinder Leakage Detector.
