Removal

1. Remove the hood. Refer to Body and Frame.

WARNING:
FUEL UNDER PRESSURE
Fuel in the fuel system remains under HIGH PRESSURE for long periods of time, even when the engine is not RUNNING. To avoid injury or fire, release the fuel pressure from the fuel system before disconnecting any fuel line.

Fire Hazard
Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or an open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury

2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Powertrain Management.
3. Discharge the A/C system. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
4. Remove the battery (10655) and battery tray. Refer to Starting and Charging.
5. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. Refer to Powertrain Management.





6. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the (A) exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, the (B) brake booster, the (C) throttle body, the (D) fuel pressure regulator, and the (E) intake manifold.





7. Disconnect the (A) two vacuum lines, remove the (B) two bolts, and position the (C) vacuum tree aside.





8. Disconnect the (A) speed control cable (if equipped), the (B) accelerator cable, and the (C) throttle valve control actuating cable (A/T only) from the throttle control lever.





9. Remove the (A) nut and the (B) clip; disconnect the shift cable from the bracket and set aside.





10. Disconnect the two main engine/fuel charging wiring electrical connectors.





11. Disconnect the (A) constant control relay module (CCRM) electrical connector and remove the (B) two bolts, the CCRM, and the bracket.





12. Disconnect the (A) EGR backpressure transducer electrical connector, disconnect the (B) two vacuum hoses, and remove the (C) two nuts and the transducer.





13. Disconnect the (A) transmission range sensor electrical connector, the (B) transaxle solenoid electrical connector, and the (C) turbine speed sensor electrical connector.





14. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.





15. Disconnect the upstream heated oxygen sensor (H02S) electrical connector mounted on the cooling fan shroud.





16. Disconnect the downstream H02S electrical connector.





17. Remove the screw and position the ground strap aside.
18. Disconnect the electrical connector from the engine cooling fan.
19. Remove the three bolts that hold the power steering pressure hose to the accessory drive bracket.
20. Use Disconnect Tool D87L-9280-B or equivalent to disconnect the fuel supply line from the fuel injection supply manifold.
21. Use Disconnect Tool D87L-9280-A or equivalent to disconnect the fuel return line from the fuel injection supply manifold.
22. Remove the (A) five nuts and remove the (B) exhaust manifold heat shield.





23. Remove the four exhaust manifold-to-three way catalytic converter (TWC) nuts.





24. Remove one upper starter bolt and position the bracket aside.
25. Disconnect the transaxle fluid cooler lines from the transaxle.





26. Remove the A/C line bracket bolt.





27. Disconnect the A/C manifold and tube spring lock coupling at the accumulator/drier. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
28. Disconnect the A/C manifold and tube spring lock coupling at the condenser. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
29. Remove the accessory drive belts, the auto tensioner and, if vehicle is equipped with A/C, the accessory drive belt idler. Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories
30. Suction out the power steering fluid from the power steering reservoir.

NOTE: Position a drain pan under the power steering reservoir.





31. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the (A) power steering reservoir pump hose (3691) at the reservoir. Disconnect the (B) power steering pressure hose.
32. Raise and support the vehicle.
33. Remove the lug nuts (1012) and the front wheel and tire assemblies.
34. Remove the six bolts and remove the LH splash shields.
35. Remove the six bolts and remove the RH splash shields.
36. Drain the cooling system.
37. Drain the engine oil.





38. Remove the (A) four bolts and the (B) crossmember.





39. Remove the two three-way catalytic converter (TWC) nuts





40. Remove the (A) two TWC-to-muffler inlet pipe bolts and nuts and the (B) TWC. Discard the gasket.
41. Remove the front wheel driveshafts and joints. Refer to Steering and Suspension.

NOTE: A protective cap is installed over the B-terminal and must be reinstalled.





42. Disconnect the (A) S-terminal wire and the (B) B-terminal nut and cable from the starter solenoid.





43. Disconnect the oil pressure switch electrical connector.
44. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
45. Remove the four bolts and remove the A/C compressor and manifold lines.
46. Remove the hose clamp and disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator.
47. Remove the bolt and remove the crankshaft pulley.
48. Lower the vehicle.
49. Loosen the heater hose clamp at the water outlet connection and disconnect the heater hose.
50. Loosen the heater hose clamp at the bulkhead and remove the heater hose.
51. Remove the radiator. Refer to Cooling System.





52. Disconnect the two generator electrical connectors (1). Remove the battery positive nut and washer (2) and disconnect the battery positive cable (3).





53. Attach the Engine Lifting Bracket T7OP-6000 or equivalent on the left rear side of the cylinder head.





54. Install the Three-Bar Engine Support D88L-6000-A or equivalent as shown.
55. Raise and support the vehicle.





56. Remove the transaxle support crossmember.
1) Remove the two crossmember nuts and the two crossmember bolts.
2) Remove the two LH front engine support insulator (6038) nuts.
3) Remove the two transmission support insulator (6068) nuts.

57. Lower the vehicle.





58. Remove the four nuts and the transaxle mount.





59. Remove the RH engine support insulator through bolt.

NOTE: Install a universal lifting eye on the transaxle and use for balance, if necessary.





60. Attach a suitable lifting device and remove the engine and transaxle assembly.
61. Separate the transaxle from the engine. Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
62. Mount the engine on a stand and remove the lifting device.
