Valve Spring: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to Starting and Charging.
2. Remove the valve cover.
3. Remove the rocker arm bolts, the seats, and the rocker arms (6564).
NOTE: Bring the affected piston to top dead center (TDC) to prevent the valves from falling into the cylinder if air pressure is interrupted.
4. Remove the appropriate spark plug (12405). Refer to Powertrain Management.
5. Install an adapter and apply 965 kPa (140 psi) of air pressure to hold the valve shut.
CAUTION: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same position. Mark the components for location.
6. Use (A) Valve Spring Compressor T81P-6513-A or equivalent to compress the valve springs (6513). While the valve spring is compressed, remove the (B) valve spring retainer key (6518).
7. Slowly remove the valve spring compressor tool.
8. Remove the valve spring retainer (6514) and the valve spring.
9. Inspect the components.
INSTALLATION
NOTE:
Lubricate the valve tappet (6500)(s) with engine oil before installing.
Position Of Components
^ Always return the valve tappets to their original bores unless they are being replaced.
^ Be certain the (A) valve tappet guide plate retainer tabs are toward the rear of the cylinder head, and the (B) valve tappet guide plate tabs are toward the front of the cylinder head.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
