DESCRIPTION
This procedure will check the crankshaft bearing clearance (oil clearance).

PLASTIGAGE METHOD

NOTE: The crankshaft connecting rod journals must be within specification to check the connecting rod bearing journal clearance.

1. Clean the crankshaft journals. Inspect the journals and thrust faces for nicks, burrs, or roughness that would cause premature bearing wear.

NOTE: Do not rotate the crankshaft (6303) when measuring the oil clearances.

2. Install the upper bearings to be checked into connecting rod.

3. Position Plastigage or equivalent in the axial direction on a bearing that is properly installed in the appropriate bearing cap.
4. Install the rod bearing cap and tighten the rod bearing cap nuts to 35-41 Nm (26-30 ft. lbs.).

NOTE: The Plastigage should be smooth and flat. A changing width indicates a tapered or damaged crankshaft main bearing or connecting rod.

5. Remove the connecting rod caps and measure the connecting rod bearing-to-journal clearance. The clearance should be 0.020-0.065mm (0.0008-0.0026 inch).
^ If the clearance is over the limit, grind the crankshaft and install oversize bearings.
