Camshaft: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the engine air cleaner. Refer to Powertrain Management.
3. Remove the three bolts and the valve cover and gasket. Discard the gasket.
4. Remove the camshaft front seal.





5. Remove the ignition coil.
A) Disconnect the (A) radio interference capacitor and the (B) ignition coil electrical connectors.
B) Remove the four ignition coil bolts.
C) Place the ignition coil aside.





6. Remove the three bolts and the ignition coil bracket.

Note: Keep tappets in order of removal to ensure they are put back into the bore in which they came out of.

7. Remove the eight valve tappets.





8. Remove the (A) two bolts and the (B) camshaft thrust plate (6269).





9. Remove and discard the cup plug from the rear of the cylinder head.
10. Remove the camshaft from the rear of the cylinder head.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: Thoroughly coat the cylinder head cam bore with SAE 50 oil meeting Ford specification WSE-M2C908-A prior to camshaft installation.

1. Install the camshaft through the rear of the cylinder head.
2. Install the (B) camshaft thrust plate and the (A) camshaft thrust plate bolts. Tighten the bolts to 8-13 Nm (70-115 inch lbs.).
3. Install the eight valve tappets.
4. Install the rocker arms.
5. Install the ignition coil bracket and tighten bolts to 8-11.5 Nm (70-101 inch lbs.).
6. Install the ignition coil and the radio interference capacitor. Tighten bolts to 4.5-7 Nm (40-62 inch lbs.).
7. Connect the radio interference capacitor and the ignition coil electrical connectors.
8. Install the camshaft front seal.
9. Install the valve cover.
10. Install the engine air cleaner. Refer to Powertrain Management.
11. Install the battery ground cable and tighten clamp to 7-10 Nm (62-88 inch lbs.).
