Thermostat: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube (9B659) Refer to Powertrain Management.
3. Raise and support the vehicle.
4. Remove the two LH splash shield bolts.
5. Drain the radiator (8005).
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Disconnect the water temperature indicator sender unit and the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor)(12A648) electrical connectors.
8. Disconnect the upper radiator hose (8260) and the heater coolant hose from the thermostat housing.
9. Remove the thermostat housing bolts, the thermostat housing, and the thermostat.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION:
Aluminum Components
Do not work on aluminum engine components until the engine is cold.
Cleaning Aluminum Surfaces
Do not use abrasive grinding discs to remove gasket material; use only plastic manual scrapers. Do not scratch or gouge aluminum sealing surfaces.
1. Make sure all of the gasket surfaces are free of all gasket material.
2. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
^ Tighten thermostat housing bolts to 10-16 Nm (8-12 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten battery cable bolt to 7-10 Nm (62-88 ft. lbs.).
