Backing Plate: Service and Repair
REMOVE1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel and tire assembly.
3. Remove two screws and the brake drum.
4. Use Brake/Clutch/Service Vacuum to remove brake dust and dirt from the brake assemblies.
5. Unstake the axle wheel hub retainer, remove and discard.
6. Remove the wheel hub.
Shoe Hold Down Spring:
7. Push, turn, and remove the brake shoe hold-down springs.
8. Remove the (A) brake shoe retracting spring and the (B) anti-rattle spring and remove the brake shoes and linings.
9. Disconnect the (A) parking brake cable and remove the (B) parking brake link spring.
10. Pull the parking brake actuation lever through the slot in the brake backing plate.
11. Remove the two parking brake cable bracket bolts and remove the bracket.
12. Remove the wheel cylinder brake line.
13. Remove the two bolts and the rear wheel cylinder.
14. Remove the four backing plate bolts and the backing plate.
INSTALLATION
1. Install the four backing plate bolts and the backing plate. Tighten to 45-59 Nm (33-43 ft.lbs.)
2. Install the rear wheel cylinder. Tighten the two bolts to 10-13 Nm (84-108 inch lbs.)
3. Install the wheel cylinder brake line. Tighten to 16-22 Nm (12-16 ft.lbs)
4. Install the parking brake cable bracket and bolts. Tighten to 19-26 Nm (14-19 ft.lbs.)
5. Install the parking brake actuating lever through the slot in the brake backing plate.
5. Install the (A) parking brake cable and (B) parking brake link spring.
6. Install the rear brake shoes and linings.
7. Position the wheel hub onto the rear wheel spindle.
8. Install and tighten a new rear axle wheel hub retainer. Torque to 177-235 Nm (130-174 ft.lbs).
9. Stake the rear axle wheel hub retainer with a cape chisel. Stake depth should be at least 0.5mm (0.02 inch).
10. Reverse the removal procedure to install shoes.
11. Reverse the removal procedure to install drum.
12. Bleed the brake system.
NOTE: Tighten the lug nuts in the specified sequence
13. Install tires and wheels.
14. Lower vehicle.
