With AX4N Transmission

DISASSEMBLY






1. Remove No. 6 forward clutch thrust washer.





2. Remove forward clutch assembly by prying up on each side with two screwdrivers.

CAUTION: Pry evenly and do not locate screwdriver ends on or near forward clutch check ball to prevent component damage.





3. Remove retaining ring, pressure plate, clutch plates and forward clutch wave spring.

CAUTION: Check intersplines on clutch plates for wear. If found worn, they must be replaced.





4. Compress return spring assembly with Clutch Spring Compressor T65L-77515-A. Remove retaining ring with snap ring pliers.





5. Remove clutch return spring.





6. Remove clutch piston and seal assembly. Clean and inspect piston and seal assembly. Service as required.

NOTE: Piston and seal are one part and serviced only as an assembly.





7. Replace inner clutch piston seal. Make sure check ball moves freely.

NOTE: Lip on seal faces toward bottom of cylinder.

ASSEMBLY






1. Lightly coat all seals and surfaces with petroleum jelly before piston installation. Install piston assembly using Forward Clutch Lip Seal Protector T86P-70548-A.





2. Install clutch return spring using Clutch Spring Compressor T65L-77515-A. Use snap ring pliers to install the retaining ring.

CAUTION: Do not fully compress return spring retainer.






3. Install forward clutch wave spring, clutch pack, pressure plate and retaining ring.

NOTE: Number of plates may vary with application.





4. Check the clearance between the retaining ring and the clutch cylinder lip. Clearance should be 1.02 mm-1.50 mm (0.040-0.059 inch).
5. If clearance is not within specifications, selective retaining rings are available in the Selective Retaining Ring Chart:

6. After installing correct retaining ring, recheck clearance.
