Static Testing - Engine OFF

DESCRIPTION
Static testing procedures allow for shop testing of the transmission in the vehicle or on the bench. Completion of these tests prove out transmission electronics.





CAUTION: For resistance checks, be sure that the SOLENOID SELECT dial is set to the OHMS CHECK position or damage to the ohmmeter could result.

RESISTANCE/CONTINUITY TESTS
EPC Solenoid
1. Set ohmmeter to 100-1200 ohm range.
2. Connect ohmmeter COM lead to EPC jack.
3. Connect ohmmeter POS lead to VPWR jack.
4. Record resistance.
5. Is resistance for the EPC solenoid between 3.23-5.50 Ohms? If not GO to Pinpoint Test E. E: Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) Solenoid

Solenoids (SS1, SS2, SS3, TCC)
1. Set ohmmeter to 100-200 ohms.
2. Connect ohmmeter COM lead to appropriate solenoid jack (SS1, SS2, SS3, TCC).
3. Connect ohmmeter POS lead to appropriate VPWR jack for the solenoid being tested.
4. Record resistance
5. Is resistance for the solenoids SS1, SS2, and SS3 between 15-25 Ohms? If not GO to Pinpoint Test A (SS1, SS2, SS3). A: Shift Solenoids
6. Is resistance for the TCC solenoid between 0.98-1.60 Ohms? If not GO to Pinpoint Test C. C: Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Solenoid

Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor
1. Set ohmmeter to 200K ohms.
2. Connect ohmmeter COM lead to TFT jack.
3. Connect ohmmeter POS lead to +TFT jack.
4. Record resistance. Resistance will vary with temperature.
5. Is fluid within range according to the Transmission Fluid Temperature Resistance Chart?
6. If not GO to Pinpoint Test B. B: Transmission Fluid/Oil Temperature (TFT/TOT) Sensor

Transmission Fluid Temperature Resistance Chart
-40 to -20°C (-40 to -4°F): 967-284 K ohms
-19 to -1°C (-3 to 31°F): 284-100 K ohms
0 to 20°C (32 to 68°F): 100-37 K ohms
21 to 40°C (69 to 104°F): 37-16 K ohms
41 to 70°C (105 to 158°F): 16-5 K ohms
71 to 90°C (159 to 194°F): 5-2.7 K ohms
91 to 110°C (195 to 230°F): 2.7-1.5 K ohms
111 to 130°C (231 to 266°F): 1.5-0.8 K ohms
131 to 150°C (267 to 302°F): 0.8-0.54 K ohms


Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensor
1. Set ohmmeter to 200K ohms.
2. Connect the ohmmeter COM lead to the TSS jack.
3. Connect the ohmmeter POS lead to the +TSS jack.
4. Record TSS resistance. 100-200 Ohms.
5. Is resistance is out of range?
6. If so, GO to Pinpoint Test F. F: Turbine/Transmission Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensor





SOLENOID VOLTAGE TEST
1. Slide MODE switch to BENCH.
2. Set voltmeter to 20 volt DC range.
3. Determine the solenoid you wish to test and connect the voltmeter leads as follows:
a. If testing SS1, SS2 or SS3 solenoid, turn the SOLENOID SELECT dial to SS1, SS2 or SS3 before connecting leads.
b. If testing EPC or TCC:
1. Connect negative lead to the appropriate solenoid jack.
2. Connect positive lead to the appropriate VPWR jack.
5. Press the solenoid's activate/deactivate button and check voltage. The LED should light, the voltage should change and an audible click may be heard. The LED status is as follows:
a. LED turns green when solenoid activates and OFF when deactivated.
b. LED turns red if an activated solenoid/harness is shorted to power.
c. LED remains off if an activated solenoid/harness is shorted to ground or no continuity.
6. Observe and record values.
