Backing Plate: Testing and Inspection
- Inspect bolts retaining rear brake backing plate to rear wheel spindle for proper tightness.- Inspect the brake and shoe lining contact pads (where the brake shoes and linings rest).
NOTE: Deep grooves in the brake shoe and lining contact pads could restrict brake shoe and lining movement.
- If grooves in braking surface exist, hand-sand the brake and shoe lining contact pads.
- If the grooves are still present in braking surface after hand-sanding, the rear brake backing plate must be replaced. Any attempt to remove the grooves by grinding may result in improper brake shoe and lining to brake drum contact.
- Inspect all other brake parts and replace any that are worn or damaged.
