Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair
CAUTION:Component Location/Orientation
The location and orientation of each precision machined component should be noted. When engine is assembled each component should be installed in its original position. These components include:
- Rocker arms, rocker arm seats and valve tappets.
- Camshafts and camshaft journals.
REMOVAL
NOTE: Provided damage has not occurred broken valve springs or damaged valve spring retainers may be replaced without removing the cylinder head.
1. Remove the valve cover and the applicable spark plug.
CAUTION: Make sure the piston is in its compression stroke with both valves closed. Any loss of air pressure will allow the valve(s) to fall into the cylinder. Use care to prevent accidentally dropping the valve into the cylinder. A rubber band, tape or string wrapped around the end of the valve stem will prevent this from happening but will still allow enough travel to check the valve for binds.
2. Install an air line with an adapter in the spark plug hole and turn on the air supply. If the air pressure fails to hold the valve(s) closed while performing the following steps, valve or valve seat damage is indicated and the cylinder head must be removed.
NOTE: Mark positions of rocker arms and valve tappets so that they can be installed in their original positions.
3. Remove rocker arms and valve tappets.
4. Position camshafts in cylinder heads and tighten cylinder head camshaft journal cap bolts.
5. Install Valve Spring Compressor T94P-6565-BH as shown. Compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring retainer keys, valve spring retainer and valve spring.
6. Inspect valve spring, valve spring retainer keys and valve spring retainer. Replace worn or damaged parts as required.
7. Using Valve Stem Seal Remover T94P-6510-AH, remove valve stem seals.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION:
Use care to prevent accidentally dropping the valve into the cylinder. A rubber band, tape or string wrapped around the end of the valve stem will prevent this from happening but will still allow enough travel to check the valve for binds.
If the valve has been damaged, it will be necessary to remove the cylinder head for service.
1. Remove air pressure from spark plug adapter. Inspect the valve stem for damage. Rotate the valve and check the valve stem tip for eccentric movement during rotation. Move the valve up and down through normal travel in the valve guide and check the stem for binds.
2. If the condition of the valve is satisfactory hold the valve closed and apply the air pressure within the cylinder.
3. Lubricate valve stems and guides with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A and using Valve Stem Seal Replacer T94P-6510-CH, install valve stem seals onto cylinder head valve guides.
4. Place the valve spring in position over the valve and install the valve spring retainer.
5. Compress valve spring using Valve Spring Compressor T94P-6565-BH and install the valve spring retainer keys. Remove compressor tool.
6. Turn OFF the air pressure and remove the air line and adapter.
7. Install spark plugs. Refer to Powertrain Management.
8. Install valve tappets, camshafts and rocker arms in their original locations.
9. Install valve covers.
10. Run the engine and check for leaks.
