Removal

Fig. 3 Radiator secured to radiator support:






1. Open hood (16612) and install fender covers.
2. Remove water pump pulley shield.
3. Disconnect positive and battery ground cable (14301) and wiring from battery (10655).
4. Remove pinch-bolt and disconnect steering shaft and joint in vehicle.
5. Remove engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600).
6. If equipped, recover air conditioning system. See Heating and Air Conditioning.
7. Raise and support vehicle.
8. Remove exhaust crossover and three way catalytic converter (TWC) (5E212).
9. Drain engine cooling system.
10. Remove lug nuts and front wheel and tire assemblies.
11. Remove cotter pins, nuts and separate LH and RH front stabilizer bar links (5K483) from front stabilizer bar (5482).
12. Remove pinch bolts and separate LH and RH front suspension lower arms (3078) from front wheel knuckles (3K186) at ball joint.
13. Remove cotter pins, nuts and separate LH and RH tie rod ends from front wheel knuckles with Tie Rod End Remover TOOL-3290-D or equivalent.
14. Remove LH and RH front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477) from halfshaft ends.
15. Remove LH and RH halfshafts from front wheel knuckles.
16. Remove A/C accumulator retaining screws from front sub-frame (5C145).
17. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor wiring harness at connector.

NOTE: Perform this step only if engine will be separated from the transaxle.

18. On automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles, remove the access plug from engine rear plate (7007) and remove four torque converter retaining nuts. Push torque converter (7902) into transaxle front pump support and gear (7A103).
19. Lower vehicle.
20. Secure radiator (8005) and engine cooling fan motor, fan blade and fan shroud assembly to radiator support (16138) using safety wire as shown in illustration.
21. Disconnect accelerator cable (9A758) and speed control actuator cable (9A825) from throttle body (9E926).
22. Remove accelerator cable bracket (9723) from throttle body.
23. Remove the three connectors for the engine control sensor wiring (12A581) from bracket located on the LH front fender apron (16054). Disconnect the engine control sensor wiring at the connectors.
24. Remove the retainer for the engine control sensor wiring from the air cleaner bracket.
25. Remove power steering pump reservoir (3E764) from bracket and position over the engine assembly. Disconnect return hose from reservoir and plug.

CAUTION: Do not allow power steering fluid to come into contact with the drive belt (8620). Damage to the drive belt may occur.

26. Disconnect power steering pressure hose (3A719) from power steering pump (3A674).

CAUTION: Do not allow power steering fluid to come into contact with the drive belt. Damage to the drive belt may occur.

27. Disconnect power steering pressure hose bracket from upper front engine support bracket (6028). Position power steering pressure hose to top of engine.
28. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from powertrain control module (PCM)(12A650) and retainer located on RH side of dash panel (01610). Remove ground strap for engine control sensor wiring from RH front fender apron.
29. Disconnect coolant hoses from radiator coolant recovery reservoir (8A080).
30. Disconnect fuel and supply lines from fuel injection supply manifold (9F792).
31. On automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles, pry shift cable from stud, remove two bolts and remove shift cable and bracket (7E395) from transaxle.
32. Disconnect ground strap from transaxle case.
33. Remove vacuum supply line from power brake booster (2005).
34. Disconnect upper radiator hose (8260) from radiator.
35. Disconnect positive battery cable retainer from battery tray (10732).
36. On manual transaxle-equipped vehicle, remove retainer and disconnect clutch hydraulic line from clutch actuator pipe at case transaxle.
37. If equipped, disconnect block heater power supply wiring from RH side of radiator support.
38. Raise and support vehicle.
39. Disconnect heater water hoses (18472) from heater core (18476).
40. If equipped, disconnect A/C suction hose from A/C condenser core (19712).
41. Disconnect A/C discharge hose from A/C accumulator.
42. On manual transaxle-equipped vehicles, remove shift rod and stabilizer bar from transaxle. See Transmission and Drivetrain.
43. On automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles, remove transmission oil cooler lines from transaxle. Remove transmission oil cooler return line from bracket on LH side of transaxle.
44. Disconnect lower radiator hose (8286) from the radiator.
45. Remove four bolts retaining lower radiator supports to front sub-frame. Rotate radiator supports forward.
46. Disconnect wire harness from A/C compressor (19703) at connectors.
47. Remove two screws retaining bumper cover braces to LH and RH side of front sub-frame. Rotate bumper cover braces forward.
48. Partially lower vehicle.
49. Position and secure any hoses, lines and components that will be removed with the engine.
50. Position Rotunda Powertrain Fixture 134-00250 or equivalent under vehicle. Rotate transaxle adapters for transaxle being removed.
51. Align Powertrain Fixture 134-00250 or equivalent with sub-frame and raise to provide proper contact at powertrain lift points.

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE ENGINE IS PROPERLY POSITIONED AND SECURE ON FIXTURE. DAMAGE TO VEHICLE OR PERSONAL INJURY MAY OCCUR IF ENGINE IS NOT SECURE.

52. Remove four front sub-frame retaining bolts.
53. Remove upper front engine support bracket and engine and transmission support insulator (6F063); discard nuts.

NOTE: Check for interference to body while raising vehicle on hoist.





54. With an assistant, raise vehicle and remove engine and transaxle with front sub-frame as an assembly.
55. Support engine with Rotunda Floor Crane Positioning Sling 014-00036 and Rotunda Floor Crane 014-00071 or equivalent from engine lifting eyes (17A084).
56. Remove LH and RH halfshafts from transaxle.
57. Remove LH and RH front engine support insulator (6038) from front sub-frame and transaxle.
58. Raise engine and transaxle assembly and remove front sub-frame and powertrain lift.
59. Support transaxle with Rotunda Transmission Jack 164-R3508 or equivalent.
60. Remove two bolts and starter motor (11002).
61. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from transaxle at connectors.
62. Remove clips retaining engine control sensor wiring to transaxle case and position engine control sensor wiring aside.
63. Remove battery ground cable from engine to transaxle retaining stud bolt.
64. Remove transaxle-to-engine retaining bolts and separate transaxle from engine.
65. On-manual transaxle-equipped vehicles, remove six clutch pressure plate bolts and clutch pressure plate (7563) and clutch disc (7550).
66. Remove flywheel retainer bolts and flywheel (6375) from crankshaft (6303). Remove engine rear plate.
67. Install engine onto engine stand following manufacturer's instructions.
