Removal

1. Disconnect battery cables. Remove retainers and hold-down clamp. Remove battery.

Radiator And Cooling Fan Wire Support:





2. Secure radiator and engine cooling fan motor, fan blade and fan shroud assembly to the radiator support using safety wire as shown in illustration.





3. Loosen LH and RH shock absorber upper mounting nuts five turns counterclockwise.

CAUTION: Since the front shock absorbers have to be moved to remove the transaxle halfshafts, the mounting nuts must be loosened to prevent damage to the shock absorber piston rods.

4. Remove mass air flow sensor and air cleaner outlet tube with resonator. Remove engine air cleaner (ACL). Remove air cleaner lower bracket.





5. Install Three-Bar Engine Support D88L-6000-A or equivalent following tool manufacturer's instructions.





6. Disconnect electrical connector at the backup lamp switch. Remove bolt retaining the ground strap to transaxle housing.
7. Remove engine and transmission support insulator.
8. Disconnect hydraulic line and grommet from bracket. Remove rubber inspection cover from transaxle clutch housing.





9. Place a suitable container under transaxle clutch housing. Remove retaining clip and disconnect hydraulic line fitting. Position hydraulic line out of way.
10. Remove upper transaxle-to-engine bolt. Remove two upper starter motor retaining bolts with ground strap.
11. Remove bolts, nut and stud retaining exhaust manifold heat shield to engine.
12. Remove catalytic converter retaining nuts at exhaust manifold.
13. Raise vehicle on hoist.
14. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.





15. Remove accessory drive belt pulley cover.
16. Loosen nut and bolt and remove catalytic converter to engine bracket strap.
17. Remove nuts retaining catalytic converter to exhaust pipe. Remove bolts retaining catalytic converter to halfshaft bracket and remove catalytic converter.





19. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector. Unscrew and remove speedometer cable.





20. Remove nine screws and lower radiator air deflector.
21. Push shift rod all the way forward, and remove shift rod pinch bolt. Pull shift rod back and remove from transaxle.
22. Remove stud nut and remove shift control stabilizer bar.





23. Remove bolt and nut, and remove shift control stabilizer bar bracket from RH engine support insulator bracket.
24. Remove retainers and underbody heat shield under shift control.
25. Position and secure shift rod and stabilizer bar to allow transaxle removal.





26. Remove two screws retaining suction-accumulator/drier from front sub-frame.
27. Remove LH and RH halfshafts and intermediate shaft.
28. Remove bolts and RH engine support insulator mount nuts. Remove bracket from transaxle.
29. Remove LH engine support insulator through-bolt.
30. Lower vehicle. Adjust Three-Bar Engine Support D88L-6000-A or equivalent to remove tension at the RH front engine support bracket.
31. Remove RH front engine support bracket through-bolt.
32. Raise vehicle on hoist.
33. Remove front sub-frame.
34. Lower vehicle.





35. Loosen front mount retaining nuts five turns.
36. Using floor jack and wood block under transaxle, release tension from Three-Bar Engine Support D88L-6000-A or equivalent. Lower transaxle to limits of front engine mount movement. Adjust Three-Bar Engine Support D88L-6000-A or equivalent to hold engine. Remove floor jack and wood block.
37. Locate Rotunda Transmission Jack 014-00210 to the transaxle. Secure transaxle to jack following tool manufacturer's instructions.
38. Remove remaining starter motor bolt and position to the side. Support starter motor with wire.
39. Remove two bolts retaining engine oil pan to transaxle. Then remove remaining bolts.
40. Separate transaxle from engine and remove transaxle from vehicle.
