Differential: Service and Repair






DISASSEMBLY
1. Use Pinion and Carrier Bearing Puller D81L-4220-A or equivalent to remove tapered roller bearings from each end of differential assembly.





2. Remove the bolts retaining the final drive ring gear to the differential assembly. Tap the final drive ring gear with a soft mallet to remove.





3. If necessary, remove speedometer drive gear by gently prying off using two screwdrivers.





ASSEMBLY
1. Install the final drive ring gear to differential housing, aligning the bolt holes. Install new self-locking, ring gear retaining bolts. Tighten in an alternate pattern to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).





2. If removed, install speedometer drive gear, engaging the recesses in the differential housing. Press tapered roller bearing onto differential using Differential Bearing Cone Replacer T94P-7025-GH and Driver Handle T80T-4000-W.

3. Support differential assembly under the ring gear as shown. Press tapered roller bearing onto differential using Differential Bearing Cone Replacer T94P-7025-GH and Driver Handle T80T-4000-W.
