Shift Linkages

SHIFT LINKAGES
Gear selection begins when operator selects a gear by operating gearshift lever. Internal gear selection is accomplished by a shift rod that is connected to shift lever shaft, shifting main shift control shaft

^ The shift lever shaft shifts main shift control shaft up or down to select the fork.

^ In the same motion, shift lever shaft pivots the main shift control shaft causing the selected shift fork to engage a synchronizer assembly.

EXTERNAL
The manual shift mechanism is made up of the following components:
^ shift knob
^ gearshift lever
^ control assembly
^ shift rod
^ stabilizer rod
The shift lever is connected to the shift rod which is connected to transaxle shift lever shaft. The shift housing provides a gearshift lever mounting. The housing is bolted to the floorpan and is connected to the transaxle by the stabilizer rod. On the transaxle end, the stabilizer rod is mounted through a rubber insulator to a stud on the engine rear engine mount bracket. The function of the stabilizer rod is to equalize the movement of the engine with the shift mechanism and prevent the engine movements from causing the gearshift to pull the transaxle out of gear. Rubber boots are provided for protection of the shafts and for sound insulation.

INTERNAL
The internal shift mechanism consists of the following:
^ shift lever shaft
^ main shift control shaft
^ ball and cup assembly
^ selector block and gate
^ two selector fork rails
^ three brass shift forks
^ selector housing assembly (inter-lock)

The main shift control shaft connects to the external shift linkage by a shift lever shaft with a ball and cup assembly. The main shift control shaft is positioned vertically in the transaxle. Shift fork configuration is made up of three separate brass forks that ride on two selector fork rails. The selector arm attached to main shift control shaft moves the selected shift fork. The shift fork moves a synchronizer ring out against the gear to slow it down and facilitate smooth engagement.
