Inboard
DISASSEMBLY
1. Cut and remove both front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamps and slide boot back on shaft
2. Slide inboard CV joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing off of tripod.
3. When replacing damaged front wheel driveshaft joint boot, the grease should be checked for contamination.
^ If the CV joints are operating satisfactorily, and the grease does not appear to be contaminated, add grease and replace the front wheel driveshaft joint boot.
^ If the grease appears contaminated, proceed with a complete CB joint disassembly and inspection.
4. Move stop ring back on shaft using snap-ring pliers.
Removing Stop Ring:
5. Move tripod assembly back on shaft to allow access to driveshaft bearing retainer circlip.
CAUTION: Driveshaft bearing retainer circlips must not be reused. Replace with new driveshaft bearing retainer circlips before reassembly.
6. Remove driveshaft bearing retainer circlip from halfshaft.
7. Remove tripod assembly from halfshaft. Remove front wheel driveshaft joint boot if necessary.
ASSEMBLY
1. Install small front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp on front wheel driveshaft joint boot. Make sure front wheel driveshaft joint boot is seated in boot groove on shaft. Tighten front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp using Boot Clamp Pliers D87P-1090-A or equivalent.
CAUTION: Tighten front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp securely, but not to the point where clamp bridge is cut or front wheel driveshaft joint boot is damaged.
2. Install tripod assembly on shaft with chamfered side toward stop ring.
3. Install new driveshaft bearing retainer circlip in halfshaft groove.
4. Compress driveshaft bearing retainer circlip and slide tripod assembly forward over driveshaft bearing retainer circlip to expose stop ring groove.
5. Move stop ring into groove using snap-ring pliers, making sure it is fully seated in groove.
6. Install trilobe insert over CV joint inner race and position on inboard cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing.
7. Fill inboard cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing and front wheel driveshaft joint boot with grease and spread remaining grease evenly inside boot. Total combined fill is 250 grams (9 oz). Use Ford High Temperature Constant Velocity Joint Grease E43Z-19590-A or equivalent meeting Ford Specification ESP-M1C207-A.
Housing/Spider Separation:
8. Install inboard cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing over tripod assembly.
9. Remove all excess grease from CV joint external surfaces and mating trilobe insert surface. Position front wheel driveshaft joint boot over inboard cv joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing making sure front wheel driveshaft joint boot is seated in groove.
NOTE: Before installing front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp, make sure any air pressure which may have built up in front wheel driveshaft joint boot is relieved. Insert a dulled screwdriver blade between front wheel driveshaft joint boot and trilobe insert to allow trapped air to escape from front wheel driveshaft joint boot.
10. Seat front wheel driveshaft joint boot in groove and place large front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp in position using Boot Clamp Pliers D87P-1090-A or equivalent.
11. Install front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp as follows:
a. With front wheel driveshaft joint boot seated in groove, place front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp over front wheel driveshaft joint boot.
b. Engage hook (C) in window.
c. Using Boot Clamp Pliers D87P-1090-A or equivalent, place pincer jaws in closing hooks (A and B).
Fig. 16 CV Boot Clamp Installation:
d. Secure front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp by drawing closing hooks together. When windows (1 and 2) are above locking hooks (D and E) spring tab will press windows over locking hooks and engage front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp.
12. Install a new driveshaft bearing retainer circlip in groove nearest end of shaft by starting one end in groove and working driveshaft bearing retainer circlip over front wheel driveshaft joint end and
CAUTION: Do not over-expand or twist driveshaft bearing retainer circlip during installation. DO NOT reuse circlips. Replace with new driveshaft bearing retainer circlips before assembly.
13. Work the CV joint through its full range of travel at various angles. The joint should flex, extend and compress smoothly.
