Removal and Installation
NOTE: All steering column components are assembled with specific fasteners. They are designed with a thread locking system to prevent loosening due to vibrations associated with normal vehicle operation.REMOVAL
CAUTION: Do not remove the steering column, steering wheel and driver side air bag module as an assembly from the vehicle unless the steering column is locked to prevent rotation, or lower end of steering shaft is secured in such a way to prevent the steering wheel from being rotated.
1. Make sure that vehicle front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove five screws and instrument panel steering column cover.
4. Remove screws retaining upper steering column shroud and lower steering column shroud. Remove upper steering column shroud and lower steering column shroud.
5. Remove pinch bolt at lower steering gear input worm gear and rack and disengage lower steering gear input worm gear and rack from power rack and pinion steering gear.
6. Disconnect wiring harness to steering column switches.
7. Remove four bolts retaining steering column to instrument panel reinforcement.
8. Lower steering column and slide toward LH front seat. Remove steering column from vehicle.
INSTALLATION
To install, reverse Removal procedure. Check steering column operation.
