Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor:
PURPOSE
The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor detects the position of the camshaft.
OPERATION
By monitoring a target on the camshaft sprocket, the CMP sensor identifies when piston No. 1 is on the compression stroke. A signal is sent to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and used for synchronizing the firing of the sequential fuel injectors.
CONSTRUCTION
The CMP sensor is a variable reluctance sensor.
