Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

Clean the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) with a lint free cloth. Inspect VSS driven gear for chips, nicks or missing teeth. Make sure the housing has no burrs or cracks. If the VSS driven gear is damaged it is likely the VSS drive gear on the final drive carrier is also damaged and will need replacement.
