Timing Belt Tensioner: Testing and Inspection

NOTE: Ford does not provide camshaft gear timing marks, or information to perform timing belt service without the special tools shown in the timing belt service and repair procedure.

TENSIONER AND IDLER

NOTE: Do not clean the timing belt tensioner or timing belt idler with cleaning fluids.

1. Use a soft, clean rag to wipe the timing belt tensioner and timing belt idler. Avoid scratching these components.
2. Check the timing belt tensioner and timing belt idler for smooth rotation and any binding or abnormal noise.

TENSIONER SPRING

NOTE: The timing belt tensioner spring is installed only once service has been required of the timing belt. The timing belt tensioner spring is not installed during production.

1. Inspect the timing belt tensioner spring for abnormal shape and weak retraction.
2. The free length of the timing belt tensioner spring should be 58 mm (2.283 inches).
3. If necessary, replace the timing belt tensioner spring.
