Removal
NOTE: Ford does not provide camshaft gear timing marks, or information to perform timing belt service without the special tools shown in this procedure.
1. Open hood (16612) and install fender covers.
2. Disconnect battery positive and battery ground cable (14301) and wiring from battery.
3. Remove pinch bolt and disconnect steering shaft and joint at cowl in vehicle.
4. Remove engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600) and engine intake air resonators (9F763).
5. Recover air conditioning system. See Heating and Air Conditioning.
6. Raise and support vehicle.
7. Remove splash shield from front of front sub-frame (5C145) and body.
8. Remove three way catalytic converter (TWC) (5E212).
9. Drain engine cooling system.
10. Remove lug nuts and front wheel and tire assemblies.
11. Remove cotter pins, nuts and separate LH and RH front stabilizer bar links (5K483) from front stabilizer bar (5482).
12. Remove retaining nuts and separate LH and RH tie rod ends from front wheel knuckles (3K 186) with Tie Rod End Remover TOOL-3290-D.
13. Remove pinch bolts and separate LH and RH front suspension lower arms (3078) from front wheel knuckles at ball joint.
14. Remove LH and RH front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477) from halfshaft ends.
15. Remove LH and RH halfshafts from front wheel knuckles.
16. Remove A/C accumulator retaining screws from front sub-frame.
17. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor wiring harness at connector.
NOTE: Perform this step only if engine will be separated from the transaxle.
18. On automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles, remove RH splash shield from front fender apron (16054) to access the crankshaft pulley (6312) and remove access plug from engine rear plate (7007). Remove four torque converter retaining nuts. Push torque converter (7902) into transaxle front pump support and gear (7A 103).
19. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring (12A581) from knock sensor and oil pressure sensor (9278) located on RH side of cylinder block (6010).
20. Lower vehicle.
21. Secure radiator (8005) and engine cooling fan motor, fan blade and fan shroud (8146) assembly to radiator support (16138) using safety wire as shown in illustration.
22. Disconnect accelerator cable (9A758) and speed control actuator cable (9A825) from throttle body (9E926) and accelerator cable bracket (9723).
23. Disconnect the engine control sensor wiring to the fuel charging wiring (9D930) at the connector located near the fuel pressure regulator (9C968).
24. Remove the retainer screws for the engine control sensor wiring from the intake manifold (9424).
25. Remove power steering pump reservoir (3E764) from bracket and position over the engine assembly. Disconnect return hose from reservoir and plug.
CAUTION: Do not allow power steering fluid to come into contact with the drive belt (8620). Damage to the drive belt may occur.
26. Disconnect power steering return hose (3A713) from the power steering pump (3A674).
27. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from power steering pressure switch (PSP switch) (3N824) located on power steering pressure hose (3A719).
28. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from generator (GEN) (10300).
29. Remove ground strap from generator mounting bracket (10153).
30. Disconnect vacuum supply hose from intake manifold at fitting on rear of intake manifold.
31. Disconnect coolant hoses from radiator coolant recovery reservoir (8A080).
32. Disconnect hoses from A/C compressor (19703)
33. Disconnect fuel and supply lines from fuel injection supply manifold (9F792).
34. Disconnect vacuum supply hose to the EGR valve (9D475).
35. Disconnect vacuum hoses from the backpressure transducer at the EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube (9D477).
36. On automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles, pry shift cable from stud, remove two bolts and remove shift cable and bracket (7E395) from transaxle.
37. On automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles, disconnect engine control sensor wiring from transmission range sensor and remove retainers for engine control sensor wiring from transaxle cable.
38. Disconnect ground strap from transaxle case.
39. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from ignition coil (12029) and radio ignition interference capacitor (18801). Position engine control sensor wiring out of the way.
40. Remove vacuum supply line from power brake booster (2005).
41. Disconnect upper radiator hose (8260) from radiator.
42. Disconnect evaporative emission hose from connector located near the radio ignition interference capacitor.
43. Disconnect heater water hose (18472) from connector located near the EGR valve.
44. Disconnect positive and negative battery cable retainer from battery tray (10732).
45. On manual transaxle-equipped vehicles, remove retainer and disconnect clutch hydraulic line from clutch actuator pipe at transaxle case.
46. If equipped, disconnect block heater power supply wiring from LH side of radiator support.
47. Raise and support vehicle.
48. Disconnect heater water hose at heater water tube located under the engine.
49. On automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles, remove transmission oil cooler lines from transaxle. Remove transmission oil cooler return line from bracket on LH side of transaxle.
50. On manual transaxle equipped vehicles, remove bolt from shift rod and nut from stabilizer bar and remove from transaxle.
51. Disconnect lower radiator hose (8286) from the radiator.
52. Remove four bolts retaining lower radiator supports to front sub-frame. Rotate radiator supports forward.
53. Disconnect wire harness from A/C compressor.
54. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) (9F472), engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) (12A648) and crankshaft position sensor (CKP) (6C315).
55. Remove two screws retaining bumper cover braces to LH and RH sides of front sub-frame. Rotate cover braces forward.
56. Disconnect power steering oil cooler hoses at RH front of front sub-frame. Drain fluid from power steering system.
57. Partially lower vehicle.
58. Position and secure any hoses, lines and components that will be removed with the engine.
59. Position Powertrain Fixture 134-00250 or equivalent under vehicle. Rotate transaxle adapters for transaxle being removed.
60. Align Powertrain Fixture 134-00250 and with sub-frame and raise to provide proper contact at powertrain lift points.
CAUTION: Ensure that the engine is properly positioned and secure on fixture. Damage to vehicle or personal injury may occur if engine is not secure.
61. Remove four front sub-frame to body retaining bolts.
62. Remove upper front engine support bracket (6028) and engine and transmission support insulator (6F063). Discard retaining nuts.
NOTE: Check for interference to body while raising vehicle on hoist.

63. With an assistant, raise vehicle and remove engine and transaxle with front sub-frame as an assembly.
64. Support engine with Rotunda Floor Crane Positioning Sling 014-00036 and Rotunda Floor Crane 014-00071 or equivalents from engine lifting eyes (17A084).
65. Remove LH and RH halfshafts from transaxle.
66. Remove LH and RH front engine support insulators (6038) from front sub-frame and transaxle.
67. Raise engine and transaxle assembly and remove front sub-frame from Rotunda Powertrain Fixture 134-00250 or equivalent.
68. Support transaxle with Rotunda Transmission Jack 164-R3508 or equivalent.
69. Remove two bolts and remove starter motor (11002).
70. Remove battery ground cable from engine to transaxle retaining stud bolt.
71. Remove transaxle to engine retaining bolts and separate transaxle from engine.
72. On manual transaxle-equipped vehicles, remove six clutch pressure plate bolts and clutch pressure plate (7563) and clutch disc (7550).
73. Remove eight flywheel retainer bolts and flywheel (6375) from crankshaft (6303).
74. Remove engine rear plate.
75. Install engine onto engine stand following manufacturer's instructions.
