Valve Spring: Service and Repair

DESCRIPTION
Provided damage has not occurred, broken valve springs (6513) or damaged valve spring retainer keys (6518) and valve spring retainers (6514) and valve stem seals (6571) may be replaced without removing the cylinder head (6049).

REMOVAL
1. Remove the valve cover (6582) and the applicable spark plug (12405). Make sure the piston (6108) is at the top of its stroke with both valves closed to prevent accidental dropping of the valve into the cylinder.
2. Install an air line with an adapter in the spark plug hole and turn on the air supply. If the air pressure fails to hold the valve(s) closed while performing the following steps, valve or valve seat damage is indicated and the cylinder head must be removed.

NOTE: If removed, mark position of valve tappets (6500) so that they can be installed in their original positions.

3. Remove camshafts (6250) and valve tappets as required.

4. Install Valve Spring Compressor Set T89P-6565-A, pivot bar from Valve Spring Compressor Pivot Bar T87C-6565-A and Valve Spring Compressor Adapter T94P-6565-AH. Compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring retainer keys, valve spring retainer and valve spring.
5. Inspect valve spring, valve spring retainer keys and valve spring retainer. Replace worn or damaged parts as required.

NOTE: If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valve(s) to fall into the cylinder. A rubber band, tape or string wrapped around the end Of the valve stem will prevent this from happening but will still allow enough travel to check the valve for binds.

6. Using Valve Stem Seal Remover T94P-6510-AH and Slide Hammer T59L-100-B, remove valve stem seals.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: If the valve has been damaged, it will be necessary to remove the cylinder head for service.

1. Remove air pressure from spark plug adapter. Inspect the valve stem for damage. Rotate the valve and check the valve stem tip for eccentric movement during rotation. Move the valve up and down through normal travel in the valve guide and check the stem for binds.
2. If the condition of the valve is satisfactory, apply Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A to the valve stem and hold the valve closed. Apply the air pressure within the cylinder.

3. Lubricate valve stems and guides with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-G or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A and using Valve Stem Seal Replacer T94P-6510-CH or equivalent, install valve stem seals onto cylinder head valve guides.
4. Place the valve spring in position over the valve and install the valve spring retainer.
5. Compress valve spring using pivot bar from Valve Spring Compressor Set T89P-6565-A, Valve Spring Compressor Pivot Set T87C-6565-A and Valve Spring Compressor Adapter T94P-6565-AH and install the valve spring retainer keys. Remove compressor tools.
6. Turn OFF the air pressure and remove the air line and adapter.
7. Install spark plugs. See Powertrain Management.
8. Install valve tappets and camshafts in their original locations.
9. Install valve cover.
10. Run the engine and check for leaks.
